Half of the Upper West side is landmarked, and much of the rest is already relatively built-up with mid-rise coops and condos—some of which is rent-stabilized. There is literally no room to build, at least not economically—unless we reduce landmarking. Thoughts?

Learning from @AnthropicAI ‘s marketing team I see 😂
We have paused some frontier RL training to ensure that we can meet the appropriate alignment, security and monitoring standards for the new level of capabilities in front of us. Model progress is now extremely rapid, and we always said we would take action if we felt that model capabilities were outstripping the pace of safety and alignment. We care very deeply about AI safety. We believe the entire field will have to coordinate on shared safety standards, but will act unilaterally in the meantime. We expect confidence in safety to increasingly set the pace of AI progress. We are optimistic about the alignment work we are doing, and we remain committed to making frontier capabilities widely available. openai.com/index/pacing-mode…

Okay so now that we shipped stacked PRs, what's the next biggest request you have for GitHub to take on?

I think the pigheaded ignorance of the BDS movement is really illuminated best by what they did to SodaStream. An Israeli company, SodaStream was one of BDS's earliest boycotts, leading to the closure of its West Bank facility in 2015. At the time, the company was the largest private employers of Palestinians in the area, and 600 Palestinians were immediately laid off. Their Palestinian employees received the same benefits, wages, and conditions of Israelis, and all of that was lost due to BDS, who hilariously (and wrongly) claimed that SodaStream was "exploiting" Palestinians. SodaStream then moved into Israel proper and to a new plant in Lehavim, which is close to Rahat, a large Bedouin town in the Negev. The facility, like the West Bank one, employs the locals: hundreds of Bedouins, particularly Bedouin women, who otherwise lack economic opportunities. Did this satisfy BDS? Nope. They continue to boycott SodaStream entirely, claiming the factory is part of the Israeli government's plans to ethnically cleanse the Bedouins, which are Israeli citizens of Arab descent. BDS, of course, did not ask the Bedouins, who receive the same wages as Jews, guaranteed by equal rights laws that BDS pretends do not exist in Israel. Those wages are significantly higher than the average income in nearby Arab towns, and SodaStream provides benefits that are rare outside of the urban areas of Israel, like a healthcare plan, pension contributions, and daily transportation. Job satisfaction is very high. In short, these boycotts just make rich white WASP Westerners feel good. They do nothing for Palestinians or Israeli minorities.
"The stated mission of the boycott is to end apartheid, and I keep saying, what apartheid? My products are made by Israeli-Arabs, not Jewish Israelis." Seed + Mill, which makes sesame-based foods, is one of the brands that might be impacted by the new boycott of Israeli goods by the Park Slope Food Coop. The Coop voted this week to boycott all Israeli goods in a contentious vote. Another example of how these boycotts often end up harming the exact people they were meant to help.

Mindblowingky stupid. Everyone involved in this should wear a helmet for protection. You guys are too stupid to walk without assistance.
An alien who is in the U.S. temporarily and wants a Green Card must return to their home country to apply. This policy allows our immigration system to function as the law intended instead of incentivizing loopholes. The era of abusing our nation’s immigration system is over.

The “Israel has a right to exist” argument has always bothered me because it accepts a weak premise. Nations do not have some abstract, inherent, metaphysical “right to exist.” Not Israel, America, France, Pakistan, you name the country. States exist because they establish sovereignty, build institutions, control their territory, defend their borders, gain recognition, and survive. That is the realist and only true, logical argument. When someone says “Israel has no right to exist,” the strongest response is not to beg them to recognize Israel’s “right.” This is weak and defensive. That already puts Israel on trial in a way no other country is. The stronger response is to say simply: Israel DOES exist. It achieved sovereignty, built a state, and defended itself through repeated wars. It has borders, institutions, a military, a legal system, international recognition, and a people who are not going anywhere. There is definitely a double standard, though. People do not demand France, Pakistan, Jordan, Turkey, or Egypt justify their “right to exist.” That standard is almost always applied uniquely to Israel, and yes, a lot of the time it is rooted in antisemitism or anti-Jewish hostility. That is exactly why Israel’s defenders should stop making the weakest version of the argument. Israel does not need to defend its existence as if its sovereignty depends on the moral permission of people who hate it. Israel’s case is much stronger than that. Israel DOES exist because the Jewish people returned to political sovereignty in their historic homeland, built functioning institutions, accepted partition, declared independence, survived invasion, defended itself, absorbed refugees, developed a modern state, and maintained that sovereignty for over 75 years. Stop playing into the emotional arguments and get real.

You can’t make this shit up 😂 @ZohranKMamdani you clown - couldn’t you find an actual victim?
😂 This “Nakba Survivor” is literally a “European settler” In the late 19th century, Muslim Bosnians (including Inea’s grandparents), fled Bosnia to Ottoman Syria, after Austria-Hungary took control of Bosnia. They feared that now, the Christians will seek revenge after years of mistreatment. Inea’s father’s family lived in Tulkaram, but he himself lived in Jerusalem where Inea was born. In the 1930’s, Inea’s father had a Job in England, he returned to Mandatory Palestine after a few years, but in 1948 they decided to move back to England. They were not expelled, and no one forced them to move to England. As a matter of fact, Tulkaram, and the old city of Jerusalem remained under Jordanian Arab control. Not a single Zionist to bee seen there. So in summary, this is a European with no strong roots in the land of Israel, whose family made the decision to immigrate back to the continent of their grandparents instead of remaining under Arab control. (And the “visit Palestine” poster on her wall is a Zionist poster by Franz Kraus to encourage Zionist tourism to the holy land. It’s not even the original poster, but a replica of the poster, with an additional Hebrew description mentioning his name 🤦‍♂️)

What a horrible take! Such Luddite nonsense! UBI is a better idea if you fear mass displacement. Retooling (to the extent effective), wage insurance, health subsidies, early retirement bridges… literally anything is better than hindering progress with extra costs or limiting factors. Not to mention ton the externalities. Please stop voting for people with lazy, populist takes!
