when i was a kid, i would always tell people i had no talent. i could not sing, i could not draw a box, and i did not think i knew how to write either. whenever i saw people displaying their artistic abilities, i sometimes felt a little sorry for myself. it seemed as though everyone had something they were naturally good at, except me. as i grew older and began to observe my environment and the society around me, i discovered that my understanding of talent had been rather limited. there was still so much of the world i had not encountered, so many things i had not explored, and so many possibilities i had not considered. i could not draw, and honestly, i never had much interest in trying. the only thing that had suddenly piqued my interest was writing. so i wrote... the gibberish, the incoherent love song i wrote at thirteen, which earned me a good whooping from my father, and the poem i wrote at fourteen, when i could barely tell the difference between "there" and "their". but i wrote. it made sense to me, and the people who read it told me they loved it. now, i have taken you through a brief reminiscence of my childhood, and you might be wondering what the purpose of all this is. the purpose is this: at different points in our lives, we will encounter people whom we believe are better than us. we might even assume that they are destined to become more successful than we could ever be. we see their abilities, admire their gifts, and sometimes use them as a standard against which we measure ourselves. in the process, we begin to think of ourselves as talentless. we focus so much on the abilities we do not possess, or the ones we have not yet discovered, that we overlook the possibility that there might be something else within us waiting to be explored. this can leave us in situations where we never really get to discover what we are capable of because we have already decided that there is nothing to discover. as we grow older, i believe it becomes important to pay attention to ourselves, to recognise the things that naturally draw our interest, and to give ourselves the opportunity to explore them. i believe everyone has something they can become exceptionally good at, whether we choose to call it a talent, a gift or simply an acquired skill. the point is to recognise that inclination, give it attention, and hone the skill until we become better at it. sometimes, what begins as a passing interest can become something we develop over years of practice. we might not be good at it when we start, and we might not even recognise its potential, but that does not mean we should not chase after it... some of us possess gifts that are not immediately visible. and sometimes, because we fail to listen to ourselves or give our interests enough attention, we never get to discover them. instead, we assume that we have nothing that genuinely belongs to us. i spent a good part of my childhood thinking i had no talent because i could not do the things i saw other people doing. meanwhile, i had an interest in writing that i had barely begun to explore. and now imagine how much we could miss out on if we spent our lives measuring our abilities against those of other people, without ever giving ourselves the chance to find out what we could become. here is a piece of meal(not advice): you do not have to be good at everything. you do not even have to know what you are good at right now. sometimes, you have to be willing to try, pay attention to what draws you in, and give yourself enough time to grow into it. you might be looking at someone else's finished work while dismissing something in yourself that has not even had the chance to begin...
