Don’t get it twisted, I’m all for failing in training. Training should be harder than competition; it’s how we learn and push our limits.
But knowing that didn’t make the doubts any quieter.
Failing in training sucks. It’s inevitable, it’s beneficial, and it can still make you doubt yourself even when you know it’s supposed to happen.
As coaches, it’s on us to remember that last part.
This prep reminded me of something I’d forgotten: when you’re truly committed to something, failure in training can be absolutely crushing.
I even remember a day where I failed the morning workout, chalked it up to being underfuelled, came back in the afternoon, and failed that one too.
I failed numerous workouts. Some days I couldn’t physically push through, some days my mind gave in, and some days I simply gave myself a reason not to start.
Yesterday I completed Ironman 70.3 North Carolina on a wet, windy and, quite honestly, miserable day.
But the race wasn’t the hardest part. The hardest part was all the workouts I failed in the months leading up to it, and what that taught me as a coach.
