ALT Toby’s red herrings are never outright lies, they just operate on the idea that us heavily associating a certain action or symbol with one thing will lead us to ignore the possibility of another thing. Like we see Carol’s katana in the Holiday Manor kitchen and think “The knight has a sword and Carol also has a sword so Carol must be the Knight”, and that leads us to completely overlook the fact that Carol couldn’t have made the Fountain. By comparison, the Knight having antlers and not being a Holiday would be an outright lie because nobody else in Hometown has ever presented the possibility that they magically grew antlers specifically on the night of Chapter 3 so there’s no way we could figure that out, and at that point it’s no longer a fun case of Tricky Tony being subversive. It’s a case of the Knight’s identity just being a badly-written mystery that can’t hold up if the player is given a fair shot at solving it
