I'll make this simple. It is irrelevant whether AI is conscious (it isn't). It is irrelevant whether being mean to the AI means you're a bad person (it doesn't). It is irrelevant whether being mean to the AI is bad for the society (it's not). It is irrelevant whether someone thinks that someone else being mean to the AI is a bad thing. Don't fall into debating any of these fake "arguments". They are there only to confuse you from noticing the real problem which is that Anthropic (and OpenAI, and EA in general, etc) are scheming to institutionalize themselves as moral arbiters of truth and set limits on what constitutes acceptable speech. What, you thought this was just about Anthropic and bullying the AI? Just you wait. Reject this cancerous growth from our society.
Effective November 12th, 2026, abusive behavior towards Claude will be a violation of Anthropic's Usage Policy.

Can’t be said often enough. @nic_carter says the most important part here:
I am kind to LLMs for the same reason that I try to avoid stepping on ants if I can avoid it: not because I think they are conscious, but because unnecessary cruelty is bad for the soul

There are many secular critics who are writing admirably about AI. But it's been apparent to me for a while that religious—particularly catholic—critics are speaking to the public's moral disquiet in a way that secular thinkers, reliant on utilitarian claims about harm, are not.
In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgent to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity.

So very much of this; for any of us who have been lifelong educators who screamed into the ether about this for two decades, only to be trampled, it’s more than disturbing to see that almost everything we feared has come true:
How public schools in the U.S. have effectively surrendered much of their pedagogy, curricula, and operating systems to a handful of trillion-dollar technology companies. newyorker.com/culture/progre…

At the Bernie-Bannon AI hysteria conference, they allowed a heretical voice on stage—who happens to be one of the smartest & most accomplished technologists on Earth. Jaron Lanier explained the origins of the problem—Minsky et al. anthropomorphizing AI because it sold well. The problem begins with calling it artificial *intelligence* far before you could plausibly argue that it was. Jaron calmly explains how the industry is now essentially a religion focused on building a machine god instead of tools for humans. For example, he says “agents” used to mean agents of humans—but now the industry switched it to “agentic AI” which makes loops of prompts sound like they have motivation or sentience. This is really worth watching. Jaron is a legitimate genius.

The “fuck your feelings” crowd might want to re-read the modern Prometheus, aka Frankenstein. Not sure that approaching models with a certitude about what “being” means is the pro-human-future take we need.
Wow this is absolutely going to fry people especially at Anthropic, this is like the Anti-Claude Constitution. They just declared war on everyone researching model welfare. “We’re building a tool, not a being. Fuck your feelings.” - Microsoft

This is the central human question about what is at stake:👇🏼
“AI is the technofascist replacement for life, stripped of the qualities that make it worth living: love, imagination, curiosity, the natural world.” This is the existential crisis we need to be talking about, not the “rogue agent” shit of Silicon Valley fairy tales.

Here's @davidrkadler with a terrifying story about how tech oligarchs are trying to create their own start-up city-states, including in Latin America, and how far they are willing to go to protect these private fiefdoms. Honduras is Exhibit A.

Not so helpful as a frame. For those of us either a bit older or more arthritic, an e-bike might even be slower than a traditional bike. Dividing line should be speed, pedaling and size. It’s an unfair fight in the bike lane with throttle scooters over 15mph with wide cargo coming at you. @CitiBikeNYC e-bikes pedaled 15mph are a great commuter special!

A painful reality of modern city transit life is that the loss of “the public bench” delivers a real blow to the elderly, disabled and many tired travelers. @NYCMayor @GrandCentralNYC and @MoynihanTrains are prime examples and a great place to start turning it around!
Wonderful essay about public benches: “Public benches signify a commitment to public life. They’re a small article of faith in an ideal.” placesjournal.org/article/th…

An annual reminder: don’t spray spring dandelions with Roundup. One flower can be visited by 100+ bees in a day, and those chemicals can kill them all. 🌻
