The “meet the candidates” event last Friday in Hutt South provided a stark contrast between the SEG’s socialist program to put an end to social inequality and war, and the refusal of the National Party, Labour and their allied parties to offer any solution to the soaring cost of living, war, and criminally underfunded essential public services. #nzpolitics #nzpol wsws.org/en/articles/2026/10…

Free Dr. Safiya.
Do not let the passing days make us forget Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, the physician who continued fulfilling his humanitarian duty in Gaza amid war and danger, refusing to abandon his patients despite the pain and threats surrounding him. Hussam Abu Safiya is not just a name that appeared in the news. He is the story of a doctor who chose to stand by his people when staying meant risking his life. Do not forget him. Do not let his case fade into silence. Keep demanding his freedom. Behind this name is a human being who deserves to remain in our conscience until the day he is free.

In opposing the school paraprofessionals’ bonus, #Mamdani has stepped forward as a champion of the Taylor Law, presenting it as a progressive measure that protects “collective bargaining.” In fact, it is a vicious, right-wing anti-strike statute. wsws.org/en/articles/2026/10…

October 25, 1937. #OTD Ivan Nikolaevich Ershkov, the chairman of the 6th Congress of Soviets Kolkhoz, a small collective farm in Odintsovo village in Moscow Oblast, was executed at age 41. This farm was named after the 1931 Congress that reshaped collectivization policy, notably by tying each worker’s wages to his or her output, and ending the former policy which had been modeled on Marx’s famous slogan, “From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.” Ershkov was a Russian national, not a party member, and came from a peasant family in Tula Oblast. He had only a primary school education. Ershkov was accused of membership in a terrorist organization, and executed at Butovo about 5 weeks after his arrest. Ivan Nikolaevich Ershkov was rehabilitated in 1957.
