Every #InternationalWomensDay I share the stats for women working in film.
And well, brace yourself. This year’s not a, erm, vintage one…
So. Yeah… If you work in the industry, please HIRE MORE WOMEN.
If you don’t, please support films made by women 🤍
In addition, after 2 years in which the fests shared equal or slightly higher numbers of documentary features directed by women, that trend reversed in 2025 with docs directed by men outnumbering those by women, 12 to 10.
The inequality was evident in the independent film sector too. Festivals featured an average of 13 films directed by men and 7 by women. In 2024, the ratio was better at 11 to 7.
In 2025, 75% of the 250 top grossing films employed 10 or more men in key roles. Only 7% employed 10 or more women.
Overall, women comprised just 23% of directors, writers, producers, executive producers, editors, and cinematographers working on the 250 top films of 2025. The same as last year and an increase of only 6% since 1998.
Several roles actually had a percentage drop from last year - women were just 13% of directors (a 3% drop), 7% of composers (a 2% drop) and 7% of cinematographers (a 5% drop).
Women were just 28% of producers, 23% of executive producers, 20% of writers and 20% of editors working on the 250 top films - all the same as in 2024.
The majority of female characters are in their 20s/30s, while the majority of male characters are in their 30s/40s. Men aged 60+ were 4x better represented than women aged 60+.
In 2025, the % of top grossing films with female protagonists plummeted, declining from 42% in 2024 to 29% in 2025.

A few last pics from the cast + crew screening of #Transaction to celebrate the series FINALE on at 10:05pm tonight after #LoveIsland.
I’m so grateful to Jordan for inviting me aboard the good ship Transaction. For enabling me to get my first sitcom credit. And for naming a main character after my family’s dog after she interrupted a team Zoom.
The episode of Jordan Gray’s #Transaction I wrote is top of the @Guardian’s “What to Watch” tonight. 10:05pm on #ITV2, straight after #LoveIsland. Hope you love it!! 🤍
