Check out my latest piece for @VIEWdigital - this time about childless cat ladies
OPINION: JD Vance may discover that the power and worth of ‘childless cat ladies’ should not be underestimated, says @SarahJ_Reilly – viewdigital.org/opinion-jd-v… - @mandy_mcauley @maryohara1 @AllisonMorris1 @JoanneVanceCDHN

Exactly. Language matters. For many people (including me) a wheelchair does the opposite of confining them but gives freedom
Replying to @DrFrancesRyan
I cannot imagine reporting this without going to a spinal injury charity to signpost support and provide accurate information on life after paralysis. Perhaps if media didn’t use tragic tropes like “confined to wheelchair”, people like Caroline would feel a little less hopeless.

100% THIS ⬇️
This sort of headline is one reason I wrote my upcoming book. Disability is often seen as binary: a super human ability or pitiable misery. Disabled people shouldn’t to obliged to pretend things are never difficult just to convince the public we’re “normal.”

100% THIS ⤵️ Treat people as individuals and not as medical labels
Utterly bizarre to woop about counting those with a specific diagnosis. People with Down's Syndrome represent a tiny proportion of children with additional needs. We need to focus on needs - not diagnosis - and make sure needs are met!

It’s disgraceful that many venues are still not accessible to disabled people despite excellent work by ⁦@EuansGuide⁩ @attitudetweets⁩ and many other orgs. We have lives to lead and money to spend so don’t forget or ignore us! apple.news/AcT2m0nehRzeatY07…

I’m biased but @PaulJReilly has done a great interview for @IrishTimes Podcast on social media during the Twelfth - well worth a listen

They didn’t resign over Covid deaths. They didn’t resign over benefit cuts. They didn’t resign over Partygate. They didn’t resign over PPE. They didn’t resign over Brexit failure. They didn’t resign over deporting refugees. Spare us the praise for the ‘good’ Tories.

.@SarahJ_Reilly writes on transport issues faced by people with disabilities. Accessible and affordable transports is one of @RNIBNI campaign priorities. READ Sarah's article: bit.ly/3nkSpgz @VIEWdigital
So many points blind and partially sighted people can identify with in this piece. More work to be done on accessible and affordable transport, particularly in rural areas. One of our campaigning priorities this year: bit.ly/3yzWtjH

Thanks for highlighting this in your campaign work and manifesto. Tactile paving is vital for blind and partially sighted people to safely travel - in May @BBCAccessAll did a podcast about people falling onto train tracks without this. Same with ‘shared spaces’ in urban areas

The latest comment piece on the VIEWdigital.org website is worth a read - thanks @SarahJ_Reilly for sharing; a cultural shift needed to end #VAWG @VIEWdigital @womensaidabcln
Powerful piece which should be compulsory reading for everyone on the need for a cultural shift against sexism, misogyny, lad culture and victim blaming in order to tackle violence against women and girls

Comment: Why our own Violence Against Women and Girls strategy in Northern Ireland is long overdue, says Danielle Dawson from @womensaidabcln – viewdigital.org/comment-why-…
The words “special needs” to describe disabled people is burden-shifting. It assigns a burden to the human needs of disabled people. Disabled people are not the burden. Ableism is the burden.
