Husband: “I think I stepped on some glass. Can you do surgery on my foot?”
9yo daughter: “Ooh! I’ll scrub in!!”
..Runs out and comes back with unicorn “scrubs” (onesie) and dripping hands
..I’m so proud 😂❤️🧑🏼⚕️
Four years after I graduated medical school @MayoClinicSOM I had the amazing opportunity of attending my oldest’s white coat ceremony @VUmedicine - so proud of this future physician!

With more aneurysms drifting endovascular, vascular neurosurgery’s embrace of skull base tumor surgery is more important and ever increasing. Clean, delicate tumor resection is the perfect application of the microsurgical skillset and will certainly improve patient outcomes …
Med students interested in #Neurosurgery - consider applying for subinternship at @Neurosurgery_IU - amazing operative experience/autonomy, variety, and volume - and imho you won’t find a better group of coresidents to share 7 years with!! ❤️🧠🌮

MMA fights get a lot of attention, but MMA (middle meningeal art) & dural blood supply doesn’t get the attention it deserves.

I’ve been caring for pregnant mothers and their fetuses for over 2 decades now, but the situation currently is dire. I’m not sure how long we can continue.
And yes, this is a rant, but also a plea. Please read to the end.
Even in charged times, I think everyone can agree that a mother seeking care for her fetus has a right to receive that care in a timely fashion. Often the baby is sick, and Fetal Surgery needs to be done urgently….within 24 hrs.
Well, guess what? Here in the U.S., depending on insurance coverage, there are patients in whom it is virtually impossible to get authorization for surgery in that time frame.
Of course we at @lafetalsurgery (as do the other centers that offer Fetal Surgery) do the right thing and do the surgery within 24 hours if deemed medically necessary.
Unfortunately, the insurance company then denies paying the hospital because pre authorization for the procedure was not obtained.
There is a fundamental loophole as it pertains to an emergency procedure for a fetus in the United States. Is an adult patient with a gunshot wound forced to wait 3-7 days for surgery? NO! Then why must a patient with advanced stage TTTS or a hydropic fetus with congenital parvovirus forced to wait for auth? These are FETAL EMERGENCIES! Of course insurance companies state that if it’s an emergency then we should proceed with surgery….but several months later after the dust settles, they deny the emergency claim and thus deny coverage of the procedure.
For the cynics out there, know that I’m a salaried physician at USC. I get paid the same regardless. But my duty is to do the right thing….which happens to be fiscally the wrong thing.
I know there are people out there who can help! Our annual deficit is something that can easily be fixed by a stroke of a pen. My NIL (name, image, and likeness) is not worth much, but this program is definitely worthy of support.
The #CNS2024 5k is definitely going to be a tradition for me! Love running in new places. Also fun running into top notch applicant @RajLavadi who completed a stellar subi with us at @Neurosurgery_IU
Loved seeing mentor and world class neurosurgeon @AaronCohenGadol at #CNS2024 - we miss you, Dr Cohen!
So fun meeting another (super boss) mom in neurosurgery! Thanks for all the inspiration @ladyspinedoc
