Refugees are individuals forced into their situations by circumstances beyond their control. Nobody becomes a refugee by choice.

It's been nearly two years since the Taliban took control of Afghanistan. The country has largely disappeared from the media, but it remains one of the world’s worst humanitarian disasters.

"We ask the world not to abandon us but to help us regain our rights." A plea from an Afghan law student deprived of a life outside the home, because she is a woman. A special @SBSNews report on underground schools, as Afghanistan marks two years under Taliban rule.
We have been provided education for girls and supporting female teachers since the military takeover of Afghanistan by the Taliban. Education, work, and freedom are fundamental rights that should be protected for everyone, regardless of gender. By continuing to support these programs, we are playing a crucial role in ensuring that these rights are restored for girls in Afghanistan. #EveryHomeASchool #LetGirlsLearn Thank you to @rayane_tamer and @SBSNews for covering our story.

Much welcomed progress announced by @andrewjgiles 👍🏻👍🏻 An increase to the humanitarian intake is long overdue & I’m heartened to see the community heard. This will bring enormous relief to thousands of ppl. It’s just the start of what we can offer to those displaced in our 🌎 – at Sydney, New South Wales

It’s so powerful to have our refugee sector standing together today at Parliament House, with numerous lived experience leaders speaking too, on the need for urgent reform from ending indefinite detention, overhaul of our broken legal system to the need for a universal safety net

I wish I had been able to articulate as well @mrseankelly @smh has. “When it comes to asylum seekers, we have barely begun to think about our responsibilities and our failures.” We need a Royal Commission. But we need a societal reckoning now. smh.com.au/national/dutton-m… – at Sydney, New South Wales

“If we stand any chance of working out “what’s really been going on” with the cruelty we exhibit towards asylum seekers and fixing it before politics overwhelms us once more, that work must begin now.” @mrseankelly – at Sydney, New South Wales

We were exiled from Christmas Island Australia exactly 10 years ago and today after 10 years one of my Manus friends going to Canada to be free and start this life. Wishing him all the very best and a bright future ahead. I hope Canada will welcome and treat him as a human being.
