Hendon Library: 'the Treasure House' was opened by Lord Elgin, Chairman of the Carnegie Trust, & President of the Library Association, in 1929. After spending £500K gutting it, now @BarnetTories want to close it & empty what is left into a portacabin. wwwbrokenbarnet.blogspot.com…

That would only give them an excuse to turn libraries into 'business hubs'. Even the British Library has to have one: why? In order to attract funding in a materialist world.

Consultant praises library staff: says 'less struck' by councillors failing to realise what an asset they had in our library service.

It's #WorldBookDay today - and tonight @barnettories meet to consider an independent review which heavily criticises their assault on our library service. Come and join @SaveBarnetLibs to show support:
Tomorrow night a report detailing the impact of cuts on Barnet's libraries will be put to @barnettories. Will they take note of the recommendations, restore staffed hours, & invest in the service? New post. wwwbrokenbarnet.blogspot.com…

1/2 I’m pleased to see this robust review of Barnet’s libraries reflects the key concerns @BarnetLabour have repeatedly raised in every discussion of these vital community spaces. Thanks to @SaveBarnetLibs and all residents and organisations we have worked with to continue to

I used to work in GG library: when I saw what they had done to it, especially trashing the children's library, so important for the local charedi families, I literally cried with rage. Most of our job was helping people: security guards are not meant to do this or trained for it.

I think I have more experience of the needs of the library users in the community than you do, having worked there when it was a properly run service. Being truthful about the libraries now is hardly 'putting off' users, but a duty.

This is how Barnet's staffless libraries work: Big Brother is watching you (from time to time) but not those watching porn, or tailguarding their way through the closed doors:

Talking to someone today who had a scary experience at CB Library recently - drunk/unwell homeless man banging on the doors to be let in, then tailgated someone. A number of library users immediately made a swift exit. Unstaffed = unsafe?

That’s probably because the budget is less because it’s a “partnership” therefore volunteer run library. Regarding extended hours I suppose it depends on whether you need the library before 9am or after 5pm. My experience has always been that libraries are fairly quiet after 6.30

Barnet Council have cut library staff and services, moving to 'self-service libraries'. Under 15-year-olds not allowed in libraries during the self-service hours, which is most of the time - it's truly disgraceful to deny this resource to kids who need it. @SaveBarnetLibs
The TES reports on what SBL research has shown since the cuts. In densely populated and high housing cost areas like Barnet, most of the 30,000+ students here have nowhere quiet to study now they’ve been locked out of libraries.

The big 'ol library opening times leaflet doesn't have any self-service hours in the way some others do. It's either staffed or closed. Also seemingly no study area either (least I couldn't see one). And small, so very small.

The leisure centre is open & manned 92.5 hours a week - great! The library which is located inside the leisure centre is open for only 21 hours a week - disaster. So for 71.5 hrs a week that the leisure centre is open & manned the library remains shut. That is a scandal.

Went to Chipping Barnet Library for the first time in a while yesterday.
No security, no staff.
There was a man sitting with his phone on the sofa in the children’s section. I felt quite vulnerable & uncomfortable, just me & my son & him.
