This is the reality for accommodation providers in Scotland today. #SaveSC

Breaking point! Platform fees 19.5%. Visitor Levy 5%. VAT 20%. That's a staggering 44.5% in headline charges before cleaning, heating, maintenance, insurance, mortgages or council tax. And they call this supporting Scotland's tourism industry? #SaveSC

This is the reality that no politician seems willing to tackle, or even address, whilst the bureaucracy continues unabated & costs continue to spiral. #SaveSC
Basic central Edinburgh hotel rooms averaging £300 for a Saturday night in November. @Edinburgh_CC has knocked out all but wealthy visitors with the tourist tax and banning self-catering #savescscotland @SaveSCScotland @ASSCnews

@Edinburgh_CC's councillors have reduced self-catering to just 1,354 full time secondary letting licences. Down from a claimed 12k as recently as 2022. But it seems the black market is booming to fill the void & they will not be paying VL or meeting H&S rules. #SaveSC

@edinburgh_cc Given how significant self-catering accommodation is for the success of #Edinburgh as a destination, why is there no voice on the Visitor Levy Forum for Edinburgh? #SaveSC @TheScotsman @heraldscotland @BBCScotlandNews @EdinInquirer

@CllrChasBooth was quoting 1754 but a closer (accurate) analysis of the data- removing duplicates, etc, reveals 1354. If you’re closing down peoples’ livelihoods, at least get the facts right Chaz

Exactly, the absurdity is that even when we absorb the levy, it still counts towards VAT taxable turnover. Edinburgh has created a system where a tax collected for the council can push a small business over the £90,000 VAT threshold. How is that supporting tourism? #SaveSC

They do not pay it. It's just absorbed by operators as a cost of doing business and makes VAT JUMP from 20 to 26%. A tourist tax in name only. In reality it's just more tax on small business already fighting for survival with bureaucracy. #SaveSC

It’s a blanket ban of independent STLs; only the hotels and aparthotels owned by foreign investors get the green light. Meanwhile, the black market goes unchecked and unchallenged. They don’t care about resident amenity or tourism. It’s all about money.

One Edinburgh planning meeting: OFFICES → 23-suite APARTHOTEL: GRANT recommended. Residential flat → STL: REFUSE. Another residential flat → STL: REFUSE. Another: REFUSE. Another: REFUSE. If visitor accommodation itself destroys “amenity”, explain the logic. #SaveSC

Remember the headlines - 14,000 Edinburgh STLs? Council data later found 1,900 secondary-let licences. Only 168 properties had actual planning permission. 168 is just 1.2% of the 14,000 headline figure. Even the 168 includes cases like former OFFICES converted to STLs. #SaveSC

Scotland’s experience is making headlines in Mexico. ASSC Chief Executive Fiona Campbell MBE has reached the Mexican press with a stark warning on short-term rental regulation: “Don’t copy us.” The message? Regulation must be evidence-led, proportionate and focused on solving real problems - not creating new ones. Scotland’s experience is now serving as a warning internationally. heraldodemexico.com.mx/opini… @SaveSCScotland @FionaCampbell74

This sums up Edinburgh’s STL mess: 1,754 licensed secondary lets. 800 have been REFUSED planning permission. The same regulatory system can licence your business while the planning system says you shouldn't operate it. That isn't clarity or certainty. #SaveSC

So either: 1. @Edinburgh_CC made up the 12-14k to gain traction for their vendetta, or 2. It was correct and there are now 10k+ homes available( so why is there still a housing crisis?) OR 3. There are thousands of STLs not engaging with the system at all. So why are @CllrChasBooth et al relentlessly chasing 1443 properties who have tried to engage in the licensing system in good faith? This is such a blatant vendetta for optics: they don’t care about the unregulated black market at all.
Greens’ 12,000 short-term let fantasy leaves £9.6m levy black hole — licensed operators left holding the blame! @EdinburghGreens @scottishgreens @EdinburghLabour @Edinburgh_CC @heraldscotland @EdinburghTories @ASSCnews @FionaCampbell74 @SaveSCScotland @BBCScotlandNews @scotgov

Queuing in a stairwell to even access arrivals. A new low for the ever awful on arrivals @EDI_Airport. You say you’re investing but arrivals getting steadily worse & a national embarrassment. You’re a continued shame on Scotland. @TravWriters
