#NorthernLights #aurora from Southern Michigan earlier this evening. Err, well in this case. Overhead, East. West. And the Southern horizon. It didn’t matter. The whole sky aglow. These are just the iPhone too! #miwx welcome to an elite tier solar max!

Captured my first GHOST TLE above a sprite with @sdantwx over OK overnight on 6/17/23 However, I also captured it during an excellently visible airglow show happening at the same time.... 1/ @PaulMSmithphoto @PecosHank @spaceweatherman @TamithaSkov

The green in the ghost matches up pretty close with the green color of airglow! In other words, if someone were trying really hard to understand if this is glowing atomic oxygen, (557nm) it would put it alongside airglow and green aurora, and a height at or above 80km

Version 2.2 is now released! This means 2022 tornado data is out, along with pre-1680 tornadoes in Europe and environment data back to 1879. Read the update blog here: tornadoarchive.com/home/2023…

The March 23, 2023 severe geomagnetic storm... revisited in timelapse - 3400+ photos over 7 hours combined into a 30 fps movie. Sit back and enjoy the best night of aurora I have ever seen in my life. These photos took almost 20 hours to render on my computer.

Despite some similarities, aurora in the mid latitudes is vastly different to me even at its strongest than average aurora at high lats. Coronas show this most strongly - slower motion and weaker structure but more pulsing and big colors. Not sure why but it's interesting 🤷‍♀️

1/ as we experience solar max and an increased chance of aurora viewing for more of the population, I hope it widens the conversation on dark sky preservation. I’m sure many people who attempted to view the northern lights at the weekend had a tough time due to light pollution

Tweets that aged well.
If I’m right. And I hope I am. The best aurora/northern lights show in 2 decades is about to unfold over North America. Find clear skies immediately! My Friend in Shenandoah VA is already reporting pillars on the horizon! My video on this topic: youtu.be/SKqpKD5w2CQ

Satellites near Earth are now measuring the heavy southward BZ component that stereo A has been measuring for the last 2 hours. CAMERAS OUT!

Quick PSA for my weather and spaceweather nerds out there. There will likely be Northern Lights over north US states and all of Canada tonight. DO NOT use ANY model for clouds EXCEPT RDPS. (The ECCC Canada model) RDPS actually models clouds, while all others infer cloudiness 1/2

based on other factors. The second problem is that RDPS understands the nuance of "partly cloudy" while HRRR, for example, is entirely BIMODAL. In other words one potential small cloud in the sky somewhere = overcast for 100's of miles on HRRR. So save yourself the pain! y/w!
