The music in Ace Combat 8 NEEDS to be studied by other devs. The way its diegetically affected by gameplay, the pacing of the tracks relative to the narrative, and the use of instrumentation and different kinds of music to really sell the characterization come together perfectly.

there's a mission in ace combat 8 where the melody tells you what's happening right now but the countermelody implies what's happening next, and when you get to the next part the countermelody drops and the melody changes and it's awesome lmao

I don't think there's anything it necessarily does that hasn't been done before, but, the way it all comes together so comprehensively is just beyond comparable in my eyes. Few games can instantly snap me into a flow state with just a few notes at the right moment like AC8 does.
