It can be notoriously difficult to educate the general public on signed languages, let alone Scottish Sign Language. Few linguists have done a good job of doing that by undergoing meticulous research. They are also open to feedback, it’s always a work in progress.

Watching the Elementary, Dear Data episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation. That’s the Scottish literary influence behind Sherlock Holmes and, subsequently, modern-day detective stories such as Poirot. A Scot helped to shape and popularise the genre. Impressive stuff.

Moriarty is a great villain in that episode, in a way, but it has a nice ending. Moriarty is surely a reference to Ireland and that era.

It’s the Scottish Sign Language sign for USE or USED, as in, we’re getting USED to seeing them describe us as a region on par with Yorkshire or the South East. If you look carefully at the sign for REGION, every single person points towards southern England as a starting point.

You’ve got two groups of people. One of them is actually shocked that there is such a thing as Scottish signing, and it normally needs to be verified by hearing people unfortunately. And the other group is equally shocked to see Scottish Sign Language signs.

It’s surreal that you need hearing people to be the arbiters for the validation of Scottish Sign Language signing. It’s unfortunately embedded in our culture. It’s not just in Scotland, but elsewhere too.

Signs@HWU will be rushing to create a standardised Southern English Sign Language cricket glossary, in the spirit of how an occupied Scotland saw the British Army introduce the game of cricket to Scotland. It’s not one of oor popular sports, TBH! 😂

It’s interesting how certain English deaf signers are saying to us, you have a good point in terms of Scottish Sign Language, an independent broadcasting platform, a democratic Scottish language body, and a Scottish corpus, but they don’t want it at all. They’re much more 🇬🇧.
It’s phenomenal how a golden era of deaf Scottish Sign Language signing teachers influenced the North of England, Ireland, Australia, Canada, America and others in terms of explicit signing educational policies. It’s astounding that there has been no acknowledgement of that.

For example, we had a so-called Scottish deaf space at that event, if you like: research.ed.ac.uk/en/activit… What happened at the event? 🇬🇧 hearing interpreters made a series of interventions, arguing against the recognition of Scottish Sign Language. You had to be there to see it!

We can’t let that one go. It was really, really patronising stuff, to say the least. We’re still shaking our heids. And you had them donate to a certain history society as a way of apologising for having a debate in a university environment! 🤯

It’s an ongoing growing trend among Scottish people to reject the idea of receiving an honour. You can see that he’s obviously referring to the idea of getting an OBE or an MBE: thenational.scot/news/266868… (natcen.ac.uk/news/public-sup…)

You have to chuckle at certain luvvies giving their support to the Southern English Sign Language establishment. They are actually so clueless when it comes to the Scottish people.

Interesting to see the 🇬🇧 Unionist, and a John Bull type according to our close source, signing away there as part of the Southern English SL elite. You can tell quite easily that he was educated at Mary Hare. He’ll never lobby for a 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Deaflympics team: instagram.com/reel/De_z5_ZCl…

Struggling here in 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿, it’s actually a recurring theme. They have to rely on a certain fitba club or go down to London. It’s the only way they can fundraise for anything associated with Britishness. Bought and sold for Southern English Sign Language gold to paraphrase Burns.

Jesus, it’s been almost ten years since we last visited London. It was for the England vs Scotland game. We had people telling us, support the UNION! We were fresh off the euphoria from the post Scottish Indy referendum era.
