This plane has four propellers and five engines.
The fifth one is a small turboshaft of about 1,364 hp that never turns a propeller. It runs a compressor that blows air over the flaps, a trick called boundary layer control. It keeps the airflow stuck to the wing at flap angles where an ordinary wing would stall, so a big amphibian can fly as slowly as about 90 km/h.
That slow speed is the whole point. Waves don't flatten out for you, and the slower you touch down, the gentler the hit. ShinMaywa says the US-2 can land in waves up to 3 meters.
Then there's the spray. Watch the clip the hull has a spray suppressor that pushes water down and spray strips that throw it sideways, so it stays out of the engines.
A flying boat has to solve the water as well as the air.

Manhattan’s seaplane pause resolution can’t ground anyone. Only the FAA can. The hearing exposed the real gap: the city couldn’t say whether operators follow its 1,000-ft offshore guidance. Unmeasured guidance is easy to attack.

The Blériot 5190 "Santos Dumont" was a large transatlantic mail transport seaplane built in 1933 to order from the French government to ferry mail between France and South America. It made 38 crossings and was retired from service in 1937 after a successful career.

This French Sécurité Civile seaplane is doing exactly what Canada’s firefighters are using right now to battle wildfires — flying low over the water, scooping up thousands of liters in seconds, and turning around to drop it on the fires.
With more than 850 fires currently burning across Canada, these water bombers are actively being deployed, especially when they can refill straight from a river instead of flying back to base.
At the same time, the smoke has been drifting south into the U.S., and cities like Detroit, Minneapolis, and Chicago have been dealing with some of the worst air quality in the world this week. A lot of Americans are frustrated, feeling like the fires aren’t being fought aggressively enough.
It’s striking to watch one of these planes doing its job up close, knowing the same type of aircraft are flying missions right now while their smoke travels hundreds of miles into American cities.
Should Canada be fighting every wildfire more aggressively to protect American air quality?
