ALT On March 14, 1964, Martin Luther King, Jr. received the John Dewey Award from the United Federation of Teachers and gave a speech in which he echoed the education funding crisis by saying that "the richest nation on earth has never allocated enough resources to build sufficient schools, to compensate adequately its teachers, and to surround them with the prestige our work justifies." While tabling, we shared information about how educators, families, and community members can support a wealth tax to fund education as well as how to protect our students and families from immigration enforcement. We marched from Garfield High School to Jimi Hendrix Park with the labor contingent.

ALT The Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), between Seattle Education Association (SEA) and Seattle Public Schools (SPS) identifies how much short term leave each employee receives and the process for using it. By understanding your rights, it empowers you and your coworkers to enforce the CBA and maximize the benefits that are within the contract. The following slides strive to answer: How many days of sick and personal leave do you have each year? What is the different between sick leave and personal leave? What are some additional types of short term leave? What can your supervisor do as a result of taking short term leave? What are your restrictions for using leave? How does using short term leave work? All information includes where you can find the specific language within the CBA; for example (VI.A.5) refers to Article VI, Section A, Part 5. Much of the language is similar across the three CBAs; however, short term leave in the SAEOP and Paraprofessional CBAs is located

Note, if hired after that start of the school year, you have 1 day of sick leave per month that you are intended to work. The first month only counts if hired starts on or before the 15th day of the month (Para & SAEOP: VIII.A.1.b, Ce

Sick leave can be used for personal illness, injury, poor health, and medical disability (including that caused by childbearing), child care to the extent required by law, or an emergency caused by family illness, where no reasonable alternative is available to the employee (Para & SAEOP CBAs: VIII.A.1.f, Cert CBA: VI.A.1.e). Personal leave can be used for personal or legal business and family matters (Para & SAEOP: VIII.A.2.a., Cert: VI.A.2). What are Additional types of short term leave? Personal leave can be used for religious observations, but you also have 2 additional days of unpaid leave for reasons of faith (Para & SAEOP: VIII.A.2.a, Cert: VI.A.3). If you are injured by a student and have been approved for worker’s compensation, your first 2 days of leave will not be deducted from your sick leave (Para & SAEOP: VIII.A.1.n.6, Cert: VI.A.2.a.5). ALT What can your supervisor do as a result of taking short term leave? If you don’t notify their supervisor of your leave status and/or fail to return to work after the expiration of any leave, you will be subject to progressive discipline for failure to follow leave procedures and/or job abandonment unless a written medical reason from a health care provider is submitted to SPS prior to the scheduled return date (Para & SAEOP: VIII.A.1.f, Cert: VI.A.1.e). Note, if you don’t accurately document your absences in ESS/MSS, it could result in discipline. Your supervisor may request a conference with you if they are concerned about your personal leave usage. If your absences continue, the supervisor may require that the employee provide documentation for future personal leave absences (Para & SAEOP: VIII.A.1.c, Cert: VI.A.3.a.5). ALT How does using short term leave work? Leave can be used in half day or full day increments. Give 3 days notice when possible (Para & SAEOP: VIII.A.1.n.1, Cert: VI.A.2.a). Enter your absences in Frontline (Para & SAEOP: VIII.A.1.n.2, Cert: VI.A.2.a.1.a). The CBA does not identify a time, but ideally it is before 6am. If you are having difficulty with Frontline, email [email protected]. Educators prepare and communicate plans to the substitute and provide a copy of your schedule (Para & SAEOP: VI.A.1.n.2, Cert: VIII.A.2.a.1a). Keep your supervisor informed about the expected duration of your leave and when you are expected to return (Para & SAEOP: VI.A.1.n.3, Cert: VIII.A.1.n.4). Upon return, enter the absence into the ESS/MSS via mysps.seattleschools.org to ensure accurate time accounting and payroll processing (Para & SAEOP: VI.A.1.n.5, Cert: VIII.A.1.n.3).
