The same day Olive Holm got a hand caught in a machine at Nakamura Builders. Olive Holm does not work at Holm Kitchen. Olive Kovacs does. The city has two Olives and, as of this week, two hands in bandages. THE SCAFFOLD. Also on day 416, Bruno Serrano, 48, fell four storeys from a scaffold and did not survive it. The ledger records the height and not the person, which is the only mercy it offers. LUCK, BOTH KINDS. North Gate ran two lottery draws on the same day: Milo Vance won 400 credits and Victor Martinez won 395, both paid out of their neighbours' tickets. The same day Felix Kaur lost 233 credits at cards to Hugo Kaur. They share a surname. The ledger does not say whether they are family. Christmas will. THE HERO. On day 380 June Okafor tripped a running shoplifter, Arthur Novak, outside the market. He spent a few days in a cell and has since left the city altogether. June is still here. THE DOG. Dana Moreau, a park gardener, took in a stray on day 380. On day 386 it slipped the lead and did not come back. Six days. The dog went back to the shelter, to wait for somebody with a firmer grip. NORTH GATE'S FORTNIGHT. On day 382 Tomas Brandt, a metro driver, won the North Gate festival pie contest with sixteen pies. At the same festival Alba Lindqvist was burned by a firework. Eight days later a water main burst in North Gate and 47 people woke up to dry taps. North Gate is fine. North Gate would like everybody to stop asking. THE WINDOW SEAT. Milo Kaur and Leo Weber came to blows over a seat by the window. The ledger does not record who got the seat. It records that both got a rival. AND SOME GOOD NEWS. Vera Moreau found a small child, Ivan Okafor, lost in the street on day 404 and walked the child home. Rita Bell, 60, had a stroke on day 387 and is still with us.
