The issue is not just the second order effects, but also the humiliation of the war being nakedly in the interest of another nation instead of our own.
I simply don’t believe this. There weren’t mass protests against the war, we weren’t getting reports of 200 Marines getting killed in a day. The war itself as a symbolic or tangible betrayal of America First? Sure. Inflation, cost of living, bad messaging? Sure. But when people say “the war,” they mean something else.
