Today in @Nature we present the development and characterisation of the first-in-class catalytic inhibitor of METTL1 as a new therapeutic strategy against solid and blood cancers. Another flagship collaboration between my lab @SCICambridge @Cambridge_Haem (@Cambridge_Uni) and @storm_tx, co-led by my brilliant colleague @OliverRausch and driven by Eliza Yankova, Alexandra Sapetschnig and Beth Thomas. A big thank you to the long list of authors who participated in this study and provided their critical input and diverse expertise. I am also very thankful and lucky to have the continuous support of @wellcometrust, @LeukUK and @CR_UK. nature.com/articles/s41586-0…

Excited to share our new preprint! ChromE-seq reads 3D chromatin and gene expression in one cell. Across ~400,000 human primary cells, B lineage has the fewest chromatin loops and is most perturbed in trisomy 21, driving the B-cell block in Down syndrome. biorxiv.org/content/10.64898…

I'm not sure you can conclude that biotech in Boston/Cambridge is on the right track right now. Some responses I've gotten this summer about the local ecosystem: On China: "We'll just out-innovate them" (Not sure how that happens when both home-grown and US-trained Chinese scientists are doing world-class science) On AI: "It's just a bubble and tech investors will move out of biotech once it pops" (The same plan brick-and-mortar stores had during the dot-com boom) Feels like the best-case default is SF becomes the US leader for biotech just like semiconductors did in the last century. Worst-case is the US misses out entirely and the world's biotech R&D runs through China. Either way, Boston isn't in the picture unless we start experimenting with new models now

Enjoyed reviewing and summarizing this important & reproducible (yes we tried it) paper on how DMSO is sufficient to induce human balstoids from human naive PSCs, emphasizing (again) the great importance cell state has on embryo models formed. I enjoy using IGV, but I need a more efficient tool for analyzing diploid genomes. So, I developed one for myself. It provides exceptional GPU acceleration, allowing me to uncover all essential information spanning six orders of magnitude. #bioinformatics #genomics #visualization

Presented at #ASCO26: Among patients with previously treated metastatic pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma, the RAS(ON) inhibitor daraxonrasib led to significantly longer overall survival and progression-free survival than chemotherapy. Full phase 3 RASolute 302 trial results: nej.md/4nWaxvM @ASCO

Now out in @NatureBiotech ! Do lncRNAs commonly bind 1000s of genomic sites? Maybe they do, but the dozens of studies that report genomic binding maps of lncRNAs are deeply flawed, with probes binding suprious DNA sites rather than RNA-bound ones. nature.com/articles/s41587-0…

Probably Craig Venters last interview. The people who drone on about the necessity of NIH “basic science” are the duds and dropouts of the class. It’s food stamps for the underachievers.

You are my AI hero. However, I disagree about biology. At this moment, we need more high-quality data, the proper measures, and relevant questions. I actually wrote about this earlier today nitter.gq/msikic/status/19895770…
Saturday mornings are ideal for contemplating AI in biology. It’s one of the most important frontiers for AI—but we can’t just copy what works for text or images. Biology speaks a different language. Right now, two major directions are emerging... 1/6

Our new discovery that bacteria utilize extracellular vesicles to deliver RNAs into fungi substantially broadens the paradigm of Cross-Kingdom RNA communication! Big congrats to ⁦@J_NinoSanchez⁩, ⁦@HuaitongW⁩ and all! Thanks for your hard work! cell.com/molecular-plant/abs…

For many of those who were asking on BLOW5 vs POD5 for nanopore signal data, here is a finally detailed benchmark we did: biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/… Summary: performance of BLOW5 is >= POD5 (from ~= to 100X, see below), with benefit of having ~3 dependencies instead of >50.

cell.com/cell-reports-medici… Excited to share this latest study from the lab. Kudos to Shumei and the team on establishing a precision oncology paradigm (CAN-Scan) with real-world impact and significance for colorectal cancer patients in the clinic.
