One evening, I called to check on her. She didn't answer. About an hour later, she called me back and apologized. She said she'd been talking to someone and had lost track of time. I asked who. She hesitated and said, “A family member.” I didn't think much of it. A few days after she returned, we were sitting in her apartment when she received a phone call. She looked at the screen and immediately stepped outside to answer it. When she came back, she seemed upset. I asked if everything was okay. She said, “It's nothing.” I left it alone. The following weekend, we were supposed to attend a family gathering together. She suddenly told me she couldn't go because she had another commitment. I asked what commitment. She said, “I need to see my children.” I thought I had misheard her.
