I Lost $30K on Polymarket to a Manipulated Oil Spike Nobody Else Saw
I bet about $30,000 on @Polymarket that oil (WTI) would not hit $105.
It was a simple trade. All week, oil kept failing just under $105. On Friday it dropped to around $103 heading into the close. So I bet "No".
Then this happened.
At 5:00 PM ET the main US oil market (NYMEX) closed for the weekend. Five minutes later, the price feed Polymarket uses (@PythNetwork) suddenly showed oil at $105.11.
Over the next 17 minutes it "hit" $105 six times, each time snapping back to $103 within a minute. By 5:30 PM it showed $102.90, lower than before.
But oil never actually went there.
On ICE, the real exchange named in the rules, oil traded at $102.50
On Hyperliquid, a huge oil market, the highest price was $102.91.
Only Polymarket's price feed moved. Real oil didn't.
Why it smells like manipulation:
It started right after the main market closed, when it's cheapest to push a price.
The exact same fake high, $105.307, showed up three times.
It was just enough to cross $105 and wipe out every "No" bet.
Polymarket doesn't protect you from this
Polymarket's rules say the feed's price counts "exactly as published". There's nothing about manipulation or fake prices. So a few minutes of bad data can decide markets worth tens of thousands of dollars.
Compare that with @Kalshi: it's regulated and has strict rules against insider trading and market manipulation. On Polymarket, nothing in these market rules protects users from a fake price.
@Polymarket @PythNetwork @UMAprotocol: please review the 5:05–5:22 PM ET prices before these markets resolve. Oil never hit $105.
