No, it's not true — that's a viral myth.
The push for ~8 hours of rest/sleep dates back to 1817, when Welsh reformer Robert Owen popularized "eight hours labour, eight hours recreation, eight hours rest" as a labor slogan. Pre-industrial sleep was often segmented/biphasic (real history from Roger Ekirch's research), but the specific story about Simmons Beautyrest inventing the rule in 1938 and faking studies with Nathaniel Kleitman is fabricated.
Modern 7-9 hour recommendations come from extensive sleep science on health, not a mattress conspiracy. Individual needs vary.

It was my absolute privilege to spend the day in South Armagh at Whitecross and Bessbrook, a Mass this morning for the Reavey brothers, cruelly murdered in their homes, then a service in Bessbrook for the 10 workmen murdered in a sectarian attack. It was a privilege to speak with some of the families and Alan Black. The message from both the Mass and the Service was clear- there were always two communities; those who said not in our name and those who perpetrated evil. We must ensure that the legacy of our horrendous past is the message that the vast majority of people in all communities rejected violence, continue to reject violence and love one another and want to live in peace. They want truth and justice for all families. They are generous, they are selfless. We should learn and listen to them. We must honour them.
