Can #PurdueAAE students build a rocket engine for less than $1,500? Yes! Will they survive a hot fire? Maybe! Watch these student videos to see what it takes to make liquid methane-oxygen engines, and find out which team came out on top in testing: buff.ly/478EU8e
Congratulations to Capt. Allyson Haynes for successfully defending her MS thesis yesterday! We seized the opportunity to take another group picture.
It was great to meet with Rep. Lamborn and his team this week. From the laboratory to the engine, we were happy to show how we're connecting basic research in combustion science and diagnostics to full-scale propulsion systems that meet warfighter needs.

We had a great week sharing our work at the @aiaa scitech meeting! Our group presented papers on topics ranging from detonations to rockets to scramjets. Great to be back in-person this year.
Our second paper from CVRDE (the continuously variable geometry RDE) is now published in JPP: arc.aiaa.org/doi/10.2514/1.B…
ICYMI, our first paper from this experiment was published in JPP earlier this year:

Excited to keep learning from this unique platform.
Our second paper from the Combustion Symposium is now online! Here we performed schlieren and chemiluminescence imaging simultaneously, at unprecedented rates, then analyzed the coupling between heat-release and the lead shock wave in a detonation.

Our department is hiring! The School of Aeronautics and Astronautics at Purdue seeks to recruit (at any rank) an exceptionally-talented person with expertise in computational analysis of hypersonic systems, including propulsion devices. Link below:

Excited to share the work we presented at the Combustion Symposium, now as an article in the proceedings. We used our burst mode laser to perform PLIF measurements at 100 kHz in our 'unwrapped' RDE to characterize the fuel injection dynamics.

Mark and Ethan did a great job presenting their papers at the Combustion Symposium this week. It was good to be in Vancouver and see many of our colleagues after several years.
Congratulations to Deborah, Ryan, Tristan, and Tim! They earned their MS degrees in AAE and walked at commencement this morning. Deb is off to Northrop Grumman and Tim is headed to SpaceX. Ryan and Tristan are continuing in our group for their PhDs. We’re proud of you all!
Made it to the front page!
Excited to share our featured article in Physics of Fluids describing multi-mode instabilities driven by high power-density flames 🔥 with stability theory and state-of-the-art experiments. doi.org/10.1063/5.0083293
@ScaloCarlo @TimoBuschhagen @RohanGejji
Our group is hiring! We have an open full-time staff position for a Laboratory Technician. We’re looking for a candidate with strong mechanical skills that likes working on challenging problems in a fast-paced, research environment.

Congratulations to Kyle Schwinn for completing his PhD defense! His work on regenerating detonation waves in narrow channels has led to many interesting discoveries over the past six years.
We just published an article in Combustion and Flame on performance characterization of RDEs using high-speed (100 kHz) PIV measurements:

Great work, Ian. We appreciate the support from @NETL_DOE and @AFOSR for this research.
Ian successfully defended his PhD dissertation this morning. Congratulations, Dr. Walters!
Thanks, also, to @NETL_DOE for funding this exciting work on pressure gain combustion.
We’re excited to work with DOE on two new projects focused on hydrogen combustion in gas turbine engines! energy.gov/articles/doe-awar…
Very proud of my AAE535 Propulsion DBT students! Both teams tested their combustors in the last 24 hours and the results were outstanding. Photos below from solid fuel gas generator and peroxide catalyst bed hot fires.

With support from @LifeAtPurdue #NETL has taken steps toward realizing the potential of rotating detonation combustion technology, which can offer significant advantages over conventional internal combustion engines. go.usa.gov/xsMFN
Check out our recent publication on the unexpected 'Occurrence of Rotating Detonation Waves in a Jet-Stabilized Combustor with Premixed Injection'. This might be a sign that we have too many RDEs around the lab; the other rigs are catching on...
