A supplemental wealth-based Pell Grant is an exciting proposal to make higher education more affordable, accessible, and equitable. Financial aid models primarily rely upon family income to determine a student's need -- an approach that overlooks differences in assets.

Our new report with @HERE_Lab proposes a new Wealth-Based #PellGrant that could help close racial equity gaps in degree attainment & student loan borrowing rates and give more students a debt-free option. buff.ly/3zgrBaS

In a new report, we show how a Wealth-Based Pell Grant could address racial wealth gaps and reduce student debt burdens. This intervention could have a particularly profound impact on students who face the double disadvantage of low income AND low wealth. ticas.org/affordability-2/a-…

I'm very taken by this new Samuel Lucas paper where he applies EMI to health insurance. Finds EMI patterns re: *whether* one has insurance & *what kind*. Innovative, theoretically rich, & useful for discerning & confronting inequality. Work to look up to. sciencedirect.com/science/ar…

The @HERE_Lab is hiring a postdoc! Project on wealth & financial aid policy w/ Laura Hamilton & @CharlieEatonPhD. Firsthand, I can say HERE Lab postdocs get extremely supportive mentorship + a good balance of time on independent research & time on the lab's cutting-edge projects.

The bigger problem is that so many people are in poverty, only earning $15k or $20k/year - less than the *difference* between working-class-origin people & privileged-origin people - while so many others are earning $500k/year or more.

Have you ever suspected that you earn less in your fancy job because you're from a working-class family? The Class Ceiling showed how that worked in the UK; new article out today @SF_Journal with @SamFriedmanSoc shows there's ALSO a big class pay gap in the US. About $23k!

"U.S. poverty is (i) a huge share of the population, (ii) a perennial outlier among rich democracies, (iii) staggeringly high for certain groups, (iv) unexpectedly high for those who “play by the rules,” and (v) pervasive across various groups and places."
Poverty, not the poor | Science Advances science.org/doi/full/10.1126… My new article just got released in Science Advances today. The article is open access. I try to both describe the nature of America's "systemically high poverty" and review explanations of it.
