If Martin Luther King Jr was alive today, he would be a YIMBY. This is a great article from his son about how there needs to be zoning reform and significantly more building to make communities more inclusive and diverse.

Another LA Metro Vermont critique:
Environmental contract awarded this month is $55m, will use new state law to be CEQA EIR exempt.
Cancelled proposed contract (with full CEQA EIR) in 2021 was $33m. Delaying for more community engagement led to $22m increase in contractor costs.

Why state action/oversight of SF on housing?
Board of Supervisors agreed to these housing reforms as part of its state housing plan. It’s now balking at actually adopting them.
+ SF has the longest permit process & most anemic housing production

Santa Monica, South Pasadena, and San Francisco are all trying to go back on the zoning commitments they made in their housing elements.
We shall see if @MeganKirkeby and @California_HCD keeps their commitments to enforce these adopted housing elements.

Legislators didn't do it with One Big Bill so it may have gone unnoticed. But a handful of bills and laws may soon “make it possible for affordable housing providers to develop nearly all viable sites in California by-right and exempt from CEQA.”

At special meeting of the @SouthPasadenaCA council on the General Plan, a resident suggested that they “buy their way out”. He was referring to compliance with state law and a lawsuit settlement. I fear our council may take advice. Bonkers.
This meeting is happening right now. From the looks of it, @SouthPasadenaCA is about to fuck around and find out. I’m gonna need another Cameo from @rogerskaer.
South Pasadena is currently planning to cut out significant amounts of the planned upzoning in their Housing Element and are risking two lawsuits in doing so. This is absolutely wild. A 🧵 .
South Pasadena is having a meeting today to start the adoption process before the Sept 27th deadline. They were really hoping no one would notice because it was not mentioned once in the meeting about the General Plan.
