It's that time of year of again!
We're now accepting applications for the 5th cohort of Goyen Literacy Fellows.
The GLF offers educators the chance to connect with a nationwide cohort, share expertise, and engage in meaningful PL--all while receiving a $2,000 stipend for their participation.

What if reading aloud built confidence instead of anxiety?
Thrilled to share a few of my thoughts on making reading aloud more meaningful for every learner with the right scaffolding.

Whoda thunk? Text is abt meaning not skill—that's basically my take, and it's exactly what writer Whitney Whealdon spends a whole essay proving. She argues reading comprehension can't be reduced to checking off skill standards—it happens when readers connect new text to their own background knowledge, which means it's never guaranteed and can't be precisely measured like decoding can. Her fix: design lessons around what each specific text actually demands, not generic skills, so kids build real understanding over time instead of surface-level test tricks. whitneywhealdon.substack.com…

I think we overcorrected on phonics.
I think it would have gone a lot better if we had started with “there’s not a lot of good phonics instruction happening, it’s not structured enough. And three cueing is REALLY interfering with the right way to read words”

In S2 of SaS, @ehanford isn’t saying that everyone should go out and do Direct Instruction, says @karinchenoweth in this new clip. She's saying something much deeper.

Michael Pershan argues American teachers mostly still use traditional direct instruction, despite talk about progressive "inquiry" methods. Teachers often add explanations/drills to inquiry curricula, reverting to old habits. He says the issue isn't ideology—it's that effective, research-backed direct instruction is hard to execute well, so teachers default to easier, mediocre versions instead. pershmail.substack.com/p/dir…

Kata Solow writes that she has enjoyed Season 2 of the "Sold a Story" podcast, which now looks at Direct Instruction (DI) reading programs. She likes some of DI's teaching methods, like lots of practice and quick feedback. But she also has questions: Does DI teach kids to truly understand what they read, or just decode words? Should reading texts stay simple, or can harder texts actually help kids learn faster? She hopes the podcast digs into these questions honestly. scienceofreadingclassroom.su…

I spoke with Nora of @EBLIreads today who gave me pointers for my hs class instruction. @ReadSimplified also gave generously of her time last year. The creators of Linguistic Phonics programs are the most hardworking and ever-improving ppl you’ll find. For them, it’s all about teaching kids to read.

Yesterday, my students came in so excited to tell me about their readers theater in Word Mapping Project class. They were a buzz sharing which word they were and reenacting their performance. I’ve never seen such delight over acting out words! Well done, @smorrisey!

Power of daily math fact practice.
Same student BOY placement test, vs last weeks 2 min timed practice.
From 0 correct to 24 correct, in just over 4 weeks of math fact work.

My students and I are using our vocabulary from the Word Mapping Project all day every day! Their favorite phrase to redirect one another with has been: “Cease being giddy!” 😅
I cannot emphasize this enough: this is THE way.
I just attended a one-day conference in Wyoming done by @StamStam193 on the science of learning. It was all one by teachers for teachers. There was no advertising, no products. It cost $50 which included breakfast and lunch. We met in the high school. It was beautiful in its simplicity and yet I walked away with a fountain of knowledge from some of the best - @smorrisey, @mommagordon2, @GTavernetti, @MrZachG, @litlabwithfaith, and others that I now need to follow.
This is the way...

Chain Reaction of a Novel Study: 📚
1. Read a high engagement, grade-level novel
2. One student starts writing their own story in the same style
3. Student shares story with the class
4. Other students are inspired and choose to write during recess instead of play football

This year we’re starting every class period with a Quick Write. Students write the Topic, Audience, and Purpose then have 6 minutes to answer the prompt. On Fridays, they choose an entry from the week to share with the class. And that might be my favorite part. 🤍

We can build vocabulary while learning to decode! I love efficiency in instruction.
A kindergarten teacher shows how she teaches phonics and vocabulary at the same time. While working with short words like "cog" or "gum," she pauses briefly to explain what the word means or has kids use it in a sentence—without slowing down the reading practice. The tip for other teachers: pick a couple of tricky words in each lesson and quickly explain them while kids practice sounding out words. scienceofreadingclassroom.su…
