It turns out someone else has already made a less surprising version of "dd": sortix.org/rw/ thus I can retire my wrapper scripts. Thank you @sortix_org

Great things coming up in Sortix soon.. stay tuned for the Sortix 1.1 release! :O
I'm pleased to announce that Sortix has been selected for a generous grant from the NGI Zero Commons Fund! In particular, we will be expanding os-test into a much larger POSIX test suite! The os-test lab runs tests on every POSIX operating system and finds bugs and differences.

I'm about to take os-test up to 11 -- 1.21 gigawatt! Over the next months, os-test will grow exponentially in size, and at the current rate, it's going to find a lot of bugs and differences in all Unix-like operating systems. sortix.org/blog/os-test-fund…

os-test has found numerous bugs in every Unix-like OS. If you read a sentence in POSIX, write tests, and run them everywhere, then it's likely that someone has implemented it incorrectly. Systems like OpenBSD, Midipix, Redox, Onyx, and more have already used os-test to fix bugs.

sortix.org is already running a Sortix httpd but proxied by nginx. irc.sortix.org runs the raw httpd and http is working. https is serving a valid certificate, but looks like it's disconnecting after negotiating tls. First time I try Sortix https, will fix!

The irc.sortix.org server is running in a Sortix VM on a Linux host. I'm using macvtap to connect the VM directly to the internet using a particular MAC, which the hosting provider has assigned the official IP when it asks over DHCP. Ya basic cloud setup :)

irc.sortix.org is now 88.99.244.4 which is routed directly to a Sortix server in the cloud! You're literally talking to directly to the Sortix IP stack, no proxying shenanigans any more! Port 6697 is serving a valid TLS certificate. Fully self-hosting! (https is broken)

My Sortix operating system turns 10 years old today!! 🎉🎉🥳 This self-hosting beast totally changed my life and ruined my studies but taught me so much! Here's a time lapse of installing it and usage! The 1.0 release was in 2016 but the nightly builds got many new features!

Just merged support for sortix's "rw" utility into Nixpkgs! Easy peasy :). cc @sortiecat Link to current Nix expression for "rw": github.com/NixOS/nixpkgs/blo… PR: github.com/NixOS/nixpkgs/pul… #ComingSoonToANixChannelNearYou

`xbps-install -S rw`, for some architectures its already finished for others its queued build.voidlinux.eu/waterfall. It looks really nice thank you for working on it and making it portable :).

rw is now available in @MacPorts. That would be 'sudo port install rw' to get it. github.com/macports/macports…

rw's portable release works *everywhere*. rw supports SIGINFO (Control-T) on systems with it. I'd love for it to be packaged on *everywhere* as well, please help by packaging it for your favorite system and let me know about your port. Arch Linux, FreeBSD ports underway.

How is rw(1) better than dd(1)? -i and -o rather than if= and of=. Efficient default block sizes rather than 512B. -c, -I, and -O are in bytes by default. -s to sync rather than oflag=sync. rw does *not* support converting ASCII to/from EBCDIC! dd(1) is weird.

I've just released version 1.0 of rw(1), my replacement for dd(1) improved with useful dashed options and good defaults. It's portable to DragonFly, Haiku, Hurd, Illumos, Linux, macOS, Midipix, Minix, NetBSD, OpenBSD, Sortix, and WSL. You can get rw(1) at sortix.org/rw/

I appreciate how the distrowatch review of my Sortix OS pays attention to the details, features, quality of documentation, straightforwardness of the system, stability, and what the system is trying to be; while respectfully acknowledging the limitations it still has.

The review is of Sortix 1.0 from March of 2016. A whole bunch has happened since (see the nightly releases), like ports of vim/emacs/nano/ed, and more. The upcoming Sortix 1.1 release will have networking, ssh, and other features the review looks forward to.
