30 years ago, Jon Saraceno gave me - a green El Paso kid with aspirations of being a boxing writer - the opportunity to write any boxing story I wanted while on loan from the El Paso Times to USA Today. He knew me from nobody, but could see my enthusiasm and basically let me take over the beat for a summer. Even though he was already a star in the profession - one that I couldn’t believe I was working alongside - there was no hesitance, ego or hints of turf consciousness. Just a sentiment of welcoming and nurturing and showing me the ropes. The experience gave me the confidence to keep pursuing my dream, which eventually became a reality. Not many established luminaries would be so friendly and receptive to a young kid. But he was. Unconditionally so. Kind people really do change lives. Thanks for everything, Jon. Rest in peace.

Jim Plunkett was MVP of SB XV when they dominated the favored Eagles. Led first WC team to win a SB. Won comeback player of the year. Came back to win it again in ‘84. If you’re implying that Plunkett is mediocre, then it’s obvious you don’t know what you’re talking about.

Understood. But Plunkett isn’t a good example. He should probably be in the Hall.

Plunkett first to take a Wild Card team to the Lombardi. He did more with less.
