🚨New publication alert!🚨 Thrilled that my co-authored paper on Zapatista-Rebel Interactions in Mexico is out w/ @JournalofCW. Henry Nott & I trace the actions of the Zapatistas to changes in the behaviour of the EZLN. We find that the Zapatistas had significant impact on the behaviour of the EZLN, generating fundamental transformations in institutions, governance, & policy. Specifically, civilian engagement forced the EZLN to refocus their initially violent goals & policies around indigenous preferences, especially autonomy from the state, introduce governance reforms, & change the level of political engagement with the Mexican government. tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.…

University whistleblowers who have reported professional malpractice have found themselves bullied and isolated, with no support from colleagues or management. The process can drag on for years. Often, whistleblowers leave. A new university, a new job, early retirement on grounds of ill health — anything to escape an impossible situation. That is why stronger protections — and a culture that protects rather than punishes those who speak up — are so important. Misconduct allegations involving senior academics must be investigated by independent experts, rather than by the universities that employ those academics. nature.com/articles/d41586-0…

One of the biggest challenges in human history has been to scale up cooperation, so as to enable greater complexity. This is very difficult in tribal societies. I suggest that Islamic empires did this through strengthening brotherhood ggd.world/p/did-female-seclu…

Congrats @FeyaadAllie on this important piece. Feyaad finds that electing a Muslim representative in India creates a “representation trap”: it mobilizes more Muslims to run, hence dividing the vote, while also consolidating Hindu voters.

My new book, The Architecture of Complicity: How India Helped Israel Conduct a Genocide in Gaza, will be published by @PlutoPress in January 2027. The book shows how India, which presents itself as a leader of the Global South, helped enable Israel’s genocide in Gaza alongside its Western allies. It traces media complicity, diplomatic shielding at international forums and the replacement of Palestinian workers with Indian labour. It also examines how and why Palestine failed to become a national political issue in India. Drawing on previously unpublished military trade data, the book reveals the scale of Indian military exports to Israel during the genocide. It will be available in the US, UK, South Africa and, hopefully, India.

Why has India failed to industrialize? Ha-Joon Chang argues that it’s because India’s business and financial elites oppose industrialization — and that it won’t happen unless their power is curbed.

At Cornell, one person— Christina Liang — handles every disciplinary case, including the Cornell Seven’s and the suspensions of over 40 protestors. Liang wrote in 2025 that “2024 was one of the most challenging years of my career…and it helped me learn that caring less is okay.”

Why do authoritarian regimes tolerate minor opposition parties with little chance of winning power? Mari Aburamoto and Masatomo Torikai argue that such parties persist because regimes deliberately structure political competition. 📖 Read: ingentaconnect.com/contenton…

A very useful report on how AI is affecting student learning at MIT. I like this term cognitive surrender, "where students fall back on AI at the first hint of struggle." We need to encourage undergrads (and all humans) to recognize this pattern and resist it.
