Thanks @YCombinator for documenting @Starcloud_Inc1’s journey to launching the first @Nvidia H100 in space 🙏 Check it out below! 🎥🤓
Starcloud (@Starcloud_Inc1) recently made history by launching a satellite with an NVIDIA H100 into orbit — the first time a GPU that powerful has ever operated in space. It's the first step toward building AI data centers in orbit, powered by continuous sunlight and cooled by radiating heat into deep space. Their approach could one day rival the world's biggest data centers while using less energy, zero fresh water, and far lower emissions. YC's @aaron_epstein visited Starcloud's HQ, where co-founders @philipjohnston, @EzraFeilden, and @Adi_Oltean explained how they built a working prototype in just 15 months — and why big tech is racing to space for AI compute.

Wise words from Laura Kreidberg, Director of the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy on the Fermi Paradox: “It may be that intelligence is not evolutionarily favourable.” @FermiExplorer
Once we have the telescopes to look, signs of life in the galaxy will be more frequent than we expect. For this Forecast 2050 we discuss looking up to the stars for the sparks of life that might help us answer the question that has plagued humanity for centuries. Are we alone out here? Laura Kreidberg, Director of the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy in Heidelberg, Germany, thinks that we are within 30 years of finding out whether humanity is all alone in the universe. Appointed at the age of 30, Laura is one of the youngest directors in the history of the Max Planck Society. Her work uses the Hubble and James Webb space telescopes to explore the atmospheres of planets orbiting distant stars. Read more about the science behind this in the @SkyandTelescope article linked below. We discuss: - How astronomers study exoplanet atmospheres, including measuring wind speed. - The race to find the first exomoon. - Why Laura would bet more than a bottle of wine that Mars and Venus once had life. - The smoking gun evidence for alien life. - The Fermi Paradox & whether the universe is indifferent to our presence. - Science as soft power on the world stage. A good rule of thumb for if someone will appreciate an unsolicited professional introduction (as a founder at least): The flow of cash resulting from the introduction will be to the introducee Ie not recruiters, real estate people, bankers, lawyers, vendors, etc!

Hot take: If a VC directs you to their EA, calendly, agent, etc… they’re not going to invest.

My favorite company in the current @YCombinator batch is the @DreamscaleLabs (YC F26) team. Four college dropouts Eric, Chris, Kevin, and Antoine working on cloud inference for robotics. This is almost all done at the edge right now, but will be a ginormous market in a few years as humanoids and other robots ramp up and will wanna run real-time inference that is far more powerful than can be done on the edge. Go team! 🤓👌 @eternaI_entropy, @KDog112358, @pentestduck, @AntoineNeedGPUs

Next year, I will give one of my SpaceX shares to every kid in America. This will be the first of many.

Fermi Explorer is going to deliver some amazing results. Launching the first probe toward another star with current tech is exactly the kind of ambitious step we need. 💫🌟

Last year, I stopped posting videos online because of the mean comments. I asked @GrahamCWeaver, one of my favorite professors at @StanfordGSB, whether he receives any negative comments. With over 2 million followers across Instagram and TikTok, and a private equity firm managing $17.7 billion, I assumed Graham either does not receive negative comments or learned to ignore them. To my surprise, he said: "Yes, I definitely read the negative comments and some of them are absolutely awful. But then I go to the videos of people I really admire, and I see they have just as many hateful comments, and I feel a bit better." Hearing Professor Weaver say this was incredibly reassuring. If someone I deeply admire, like Professor Weaver, receives negative comments too, perhaps I need to grow a thicker skin and accept that not everyone will like me. For everything you post, most people will be indifferent. Some might feel inspired, while others might dislike what you have to say. Much of how people react is shaped by their own experiences and backgrounds, which we have little control over. In the end, all I can do is remain authentic if I want to share my voice with the world. Months after graduating from GSB, I still find myself thinking about something Graham told us: "Your soul already told you. Everything else is just a negotiation with your fear." Deep down, we already know what we want to do, but find excuses to stop ourselves from trying. So I'm taking Graham's advice and committing to putting myself out there more, starting with this post! Please do hold me accountable and maybe we can overcome our fears together. :) Be on the lookout for more video content to come!

That time Billy waded in on the orbital data center debate 🤓
How to kill 5 companies with a single tweet? Just watch Elon. No one can compete with their cost to orbit. If anyone building data centers in space think they can compete with StarLink (assuming the market demand and technical feasibility is there) they are sorely mistaken.

Not really. You just have to accept that it will take longer. I don’t think SIs would care! @FermiExplorer
The nearest star is about 4.24 light-years away. At 25,000 mph, a conventional spacecraft would take roughly 110,000 years to get there. That doesn’t prove any sighting came from another star. It shows why claims of interstellar visitors run straight into the limits of known physics.

Yup
Best documentary of all time — hands down, no exaggeration. Best picture, best doc and best director locked .. and if you can give best actor and best supporting actor to a “documentary” @nathanfielder and REDACTED-no-spoilers deserve it. #YouCanSeeEverything
