But neither did these peoples cease to possess ancestry because someone classified them all as “white.” When I say “white” the emphasis is not merely on the color of the skin. I’m talking about descent - about the particular people from whom I came, their history, their memory, their culture, their place. Race, people, nation, and citizenship are not interchangeable categories. But neither are they unrelated. White people exist. European peoples exist. And those peoples are no more reducible to pigmentation than anyone else. We’ve been taught to perform that reduction on ourselves. “Why can’t white Christians have a nation?” Before asking what white, people, or nation even means, many respond: “The question itself is sinful!” Why?
