What could retinal treatment look like five years from now?
At AAO 2026 Retina Subspecialty Day, Drs. Charles Wykoff, Donald D'Amico, and Ehsan Rahimy discussed emerging approaches to retinal disease, from investigational agents including tarcocimab, tabirafusp, and remigromig, to the PRIMA photovoltaic subretinal implant for end-stage geographic atrophy.
Watch the video for the outlook.

Recent PhD graduates have until Nov. 3 to apply for the Charles H. Best Postdoctoral Fellowship at #UofT's Donnelly Centre, offering $60K for one year: tinyurl.com/4rv5jdxt
3/4 New mechanism: instead of blocking VEGF, it activates Wnt to repair the blood–retinal barrier. It traces back to our work at @UofT on engineering Wnt-activating antibodies (pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/3145…) (pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/3410…), then went through AntlerA, EyeBio and Merck.
4/4 Full year-one results come at #AAO2026 on Oct 10, and the BAROLO (DME) and SUPER TUSCAN (nAMD/RVO) trials are ongoing. Grateful to the trainees, collaborators and patients behind this.
2/4 Both doses were non-inferior to ranibizumab in best-corrected visual acuity at week 52. The randomized, double-masked trial enrolled 984 patients.
1/4 Today Merck reported that remigromig (MK-3000, formerly EYE103), a tri-specific Wnt agonist antibody, met its primary endpoint in the pivotal ph. 3 BRUNELLO trial in diabetic macular edema merck.com/news/mercks-remigr…

$MRK's WNT with positive Ph3 data in DME. This is significant as its the first non-VEGF MONOTHERAPY to show success in retina, after steroids. Nice readthrough for $SRZN as its next up with a VEGF/WNT bispecific.

Many drugs work by binding to a specific target in the body and blocking or changing what it does. An important first step in the drug development process is designing a molecule that can bind tightly to its target. Traditionally, that's meant weeks or months of expert work per target, sifting through a large number of candidates to identify the few that work.
We wanted to test if Claude could successfully design novel protein binders from scratch (also called de novo design). With a protein design prompt written by a human expert, Claude autonomously designed protein binders against 14 out of 15 targets.
We then worked with Adaptyv Bio and Twist Bioscience, who independently built and tested the proteins Claude designed.
