Things to look forward to.
A top GOP official accidentally said on a hot mic, "If Netanyahu loses reelection in Isreal, and Democrats in the US win subpoena power in both Chambers of Congress, all I can say is Jared Kushner is completely, totally, utterly, and historically, spectacularly fucked."

This is like Lucy dissing Beethoven to Schroeder. "Beethoven isn't so great... He never got his picture on a bubblegum card, did he? How could he be great if he never got his picture on a bubblegum card?"
OK, I'll bite. If John Cassavetes is so insanely influential and brilliant, why have I not heard about him until recently? I've been on a side-quest with classic and esoteric movies, mostly through the Criterion collection. I've watched dozens of Criterion closet picks from filmmakers and actors I admire. They pick Cassavetes films ALL THE TIME. Probably more than any other director except Scorsese. I haven't seen a single Cassavetes film. I don't think I've ever heard anyone talk about a Cassavetes film outside of those videos. I'm not a slouch on film, I've got a pretty wide spread on what I've seen & what I appreciate. How has Cassavetes slipped through that net so completely for so long?

Hey @HP , bought and paid-in-full for one of your laptops, oh, about five years ago. And no complaints! Until recently when you started running your own ads on it every time I signed on. Well, I never signed on for THAT. Stop it, or at least tell me how to stop it. Or bye-bye.

"There's a hundred million descendents of Rose and Joe Kennedy in the world. And yet only one of them is an ex-junkie, sexually predatory, steroidal bigot who eats roadkill, spouts fringe conspiracy nonsense and eagerly tongues the presidential perineum."
RFK: "There's five hundred million Arabs in the world. And yet they don't produce science. They don't win the Novel Prize. They don't win the Fields Prize. They don't win the Wolf Prize. They don't produce literature."

The quietly confident, deep-down decent cowboy may be Hollywood’s oldest, sexiest hero. We’ve already lost Sam Shepard, Robert Redford, and now Tom Skerritt? It’s up to you, Katharine Ross: Make sure Sam Elliott takes care of himself.

Or, as we call it at CBS News, "our editorial process."
Some parents are ditching plates and silverware for a “dump dinner,” pouring the meal straight onto a foil-covered table and letting the kids dig in. For these families, it’s less about manners and more about making memories.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
The "dump dinner" is a viral social media trend of staged videos primarily for engagement, not a common family practice. Children in videos often react with alarm rather than requesting it. thebiglead.com/dump-dinner-vi… theguardian.com/food/2026/feb/… newsweek.com/table-dump-din…

Note to journalists, real or would-be: If you're going to expose a politician as hypocritical, corrupt, senile, or treasonous? Best to do it while they're still alive and in office.

They broke Eisenhower’s globe because they didn’t want to wait for a team of specialist historians to move it. I cannot think of a more apt metaphor for Pete Hegseth’s DoD.
EXCLUSIVE: Pete Hegseth wanted Gen. Dwight Eisenhower’s globe for his office. His staff broke it. We have photos.

Thanks to @bleeckerstfilms and everyone who brought "A Talent For Murder" (and director Anton Corbjin, via Zoom) to the @TPHRFC last night. A devilishly tricky fiction about Patricia Highsmith that Highsmith could have written herself, starring a superb Helen Mirren. Opens Friday

Go Bengals!
Yikes: The Bengals are under heavy criticism online for IGNORING Vice President JD Vance as he tried to greet them. The large majority of the team did not shake his hand or even acknowledge Vance. Many Republicans are calling for the NFL to fine them.

I know of four other reviewers (including me) who were born with a year or so of the late Ann Hornaday. Not a coincidence; a result of coming of age during the amazing cinematic '70s, and then looking for jobs in the '80s when most outlets still had staff critics. Long-gone times

i rec reading @rachel_handler's fab article immediately because if you go to the comments right NOW, a cantankerous Brad Reese is replying to nearly everybody like the comment section is his personal AMA
This past Valentine’s Day, 71-year-old Brad Reese, proud grandson of Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups inventor H. B. Reese, posted a scathing open letter to the manager of corporate brand and editorial at Hershey, accusing the company of unforgivably altering many Reese’s products by replacing real chocolate with compound chocolate — basically using vegetable oils instead of cocoa butter to lower costs and replacing real peanut butter with “peanut-butter-style crèmes.” “And Reese wasn’t alone in feeling like everything was getting worse,” writes Rachel Handler. “Everyone in my life I spoke to agreed that something was amiss, that Reese’s — and commercial chocolate in general — didn’t taste the way it used to.” Handler would spend the next several months tumbling down a chocolate vortex, encountering dozens of eccentric characters, all disagreeing about the fundamental question of what chocolate even is and who it should be for. “I learned that — not to sound like a LinkedIn guy — what’s going on with chocolate is a parable for the modern world. That at this particularly bleak end stage of capitalism, everything we once treasured has or will lose its essential essence and MrBeast will always be involved somehow.” For our cover story, Handler takes a deep dive into the molten belly of the chocolate world. We mourn the loss of our brilliant, beloved colleague Ann Hornaday, longtime film critic for The Washington Post and author of “Talking Pictures: How to Watch Movies” and an upcoming book on ALL THE PRESIDENT’S MEN. A gift of a critic, writer and friend. washingtonpost.com/obituarie…

Because — present company possibly excepted — you’re not a selfish old moron, and realize that while a mortgage pays off a personal debt, real estate taxes fund a lot of things and services you and your neighbors need, use, and enjoy.
“I’m old. I’ve paid my home off,” said Ray Warner, a 72-year-old Akron resident. “Why would I pay property tax?” Across the country, homeowners are asking the same question and revolting against property taxes at a scale not seen in a half century. politico.com/news/magazine/2…

Big story in today’s NYT on parishioners mourning the apparently shuttered Most Holy Redeemer; at no point does it give the address, although it mentions the Lower East Side several times. (It’s actually in the East Village, at 173 E 3d.) Is hiding facts the latest NYT puzzle?

Seeing this even more frequently lately in features and reviews. So what exactly is the address of this new boutique? What does that entree you raved about cost? Um, I dunno. Why do you ask?
