Heartbroken and shocked. Talented and wonderful Liam who was about to start her Master's degree in my lab, was killed in an accident in Thailand.

Given incredibly difficult, conflict-filled years,it makes me proud to present @BZman101 beautiful work on intra-host evolution in SARS-CoV-2. Briefly,we find evolution differs among patients: in some nothing happens; in others rampant adaptive evolution. academic.oup.com/ve/article/…

The cool thing is that the cheater virus cheats other intact viruses! So it overcomes host defenses either inherently or by relying on co-infection with intact virus...

5. Finally we speculate that cheaters are probably very common and may even serve as stepping stones on the way to generate novel forms of viruses... Stay tuned!

4. This is like pulling the strings of a marionette - cheaters change one part of the replication cycle and helpers compensate, all with the "aim" of producing more cheater progeny.

3. When cheaters are evolved, helper mutations are added onto the genome. If a cheat is defective in replication, we find that helpers alter lysis and entry. And when a cheat is defective in lysis, we find helpers alter replication.

2. We find that cheater viruses of the MS2 bacteriophage occur in a really small region of the genome, where there are three overlapping genetic functions. This is normally a conserved region but cheats... overcome the challenge.

1. Cheaters are both defective viruses, but outcompete the WT virus when both viruses co-infect a cell. Who would have thought viruses could be so sly?

Heartbroken to share that Yagev Buchshtab, brother of PhD student Nufar, was murdered in Hamas captivity. Too much unbearable pain. This should not have ended, or started, this way.

80 days ago @SternLab posted this video by her student Nufar Buchstab, a plea for help regarding her brother Yagev Buchstab who was being held hostage in Gaza for 80 days. It's now 160 days.
My brilliant PhD student Nufar, whose brother is a hostage in Gaza for over 80 days. Nothing prepared me to being a mentor under such a scenario. How can we even continue research in the lab?? Please help her, help us, spread this heart-breaking humanitarian call.

IMO Israel has implemented more measure to prevent civilian casualties in urban warfare than any other military in the history of war. This includes many measure the U.S. has (or has not) taken in wars & battles but also many measures no military in the world has ever taken. 🧵
