UN's climate chief clearly *furious* with Rishi Sunak's u-turns on climate policies. The optics (and politics) of this are just terrible from all sides - unless you are a Tufton St lobbyist. This will be how history books remember Sunak. So odd that he can't see that
Replying to @edking_I
@simonstiell, @UNFCCC boss “No G7 Country has yet ‘over delivered’ on climate. On the contrary there is a lot more action needed, specifically from them. Is turning away from climate action in 2023 really leadership?”

OK this garbage has to stop @grantshapps Let's take a closer look at these claims 1 by 1 with a 🧵 There are 5 claims that N Sea oil & gas licencing is good for: 1. bills 2. economy 3. security 4. climate 5. bankrolled by Just Stop oil funder 1/10
This is a crazy policy. Labour’s plan to ban new oil and gas would be a disaster for your bills, the UK economy, national security and the climate. And now we know it’s bankrolled by the same donor who funds Just Stop Oil as they cause misery to people's lives.

Rishi Sunak - "Northern Ireland is in the unbelievably special position... in the entire world... in having privileged access to the UK home market... but also the European Union single market... nobody else has that... only you guys" in Northern Ireland. 🤦

Best piece so far untangling the various strands leading to such high gas prices. And an excellent conclusion: we need more renewables and less fossil fuel to build a stable, low cost system.

The wholesale price of European nat gas is now equivalent to $150.5 a barrel -- higher than Brent crude ever was during the 2008 price boom (and yes, barrel of oil equivalent pricing has its challenges, but worth using to show magnitude of the crisis) h/t @Ole_S_Hansen

I know there’s a lot of politics this morning, but quite the move from Boris Johnson to step up calls for more climate funding from rich nations after cutting the UK’s Overseas Aid Budget. businessgreen.com/news/40309…

Is there a big wave of new solar farms coming to the UK? A hefty 2GW of capacity went into the planning system last year vs 1GW in 2019 and 13GW currently installed (And given solar subsidies are now ancient history these would, by definition, be subsidy-free if they get built)
