🎬 STINKING PAUSE – EPISODE 210 🎬
This week we’re taking a trip from the crooked streets of New Jersey to the windswept plains of… well, wherever Howard Hughes thought Mongolia was.
First up, COP LAND (1997) — James Mangold’s terrific, grimy crime drama starring Sylvester Stallone, Harvey Keitel, Robert De Niro and Ray Liotta.
Stallone ditches the muscles and one-liners to play Freddy Heflin, the quietly defeated sheriff of a small New Jersey town populated almost entirely by New York cops — many of whom are up to their necks in corruption.
And then there’s Ray Liotta.
Wild-eyed, wired, unpredictable and seemingly only ever five seconds away from either saving the day or setting fire to it.
We look back at Liotta’s career, his extraordinary screen presence and why Cop Land remains one of the best showcases for what he could do.
And because Stinking Pause believes in maintaining absolutely no sense of tonal consistency whatsoever, we then move on to…
THE CONQUEROR (1956)
John Wayne.
As Genghis Khan.
Yes. Really.
One of Hollywood’s most notorious casting decisions, filmed in the Utah desert, produced by Howard Hughes and featuring dialogue that makes Carry On Cleo sound like Shakespeare.
Is it genuinely one of the worst films ever made?
Is Wayne actually as disastrous as legend suggests?
And how did a film this spectacularly misguided ever get made in the first place?
Two movies.
One very good.
One… The Conqueror.

Murder, Manuscripts and Miniature Mayhem
This time on Stinking Pause, we’re entering the dangerous world of theatre, thrillers and people who really should know better than to keep decorative weapons around the house.
Our main review is Deathtrap from 1982, Sidney Lumet’s twisty, slippery adaptation of Ira Levin’s hugely successful stage play.
@themichaelcaine stars as Sidney Bruhl, a once-celebrated playwright whose career has gone a bit quiet — never a healthy condition in a thriller. Into his life comes Christopher Reeve as Clifford Anderson, a talented young writer with a manuscript that may be just a little too good for everyone’s safety. Add Dyan Cannon, a house full of suspicious props, and enough double-crossing to make a theatre critic nervous, and you have a film that knows exactly how to pull the rug, then check whether there’s another rug underneath.
In the middle of the show, we spend some time with Ira Levin, the master plotter behind Rosemary’s Baby, The Stepford Wives, The Boys from Brazil and, of course, Deathtrap. Levin had a wonderful knack for taking ordinary homes, marriages, neighbours and polite conversations, then quietly making them feel deeply unsafe.
And then, because we have standards and enjoy lowering them, Celluloid Stinkers takes us back to 1938 for The Terror of Tiny Town, the all-little-people musical western that remains one of Hollywood’s strangest “somebody definitely approved this” moments.
Thrills, twists, questionable judgement and a western that probably needed a second meeting — what more could you want?

🎙️ NEW FROM THE STINKING PAUSE PODCAST
Welcome to Bundanyabba. The beer is cold, the welcome is warm, and leaving may prove surprisingly difficult.
@scophi @THRIIIIKER and @pdoleary are joined by Maurice in Melbourne and Kerry in the USA to discuss Ted Kotcheff’s extraordinary 1971 drama WAKE IN FRIGHT — a bruising descent into heat, gambling, alcohol and aggressively enthusiastic hospitality.
We also celebrate the life and career of DONALD PLEASENCE, whose performance as Doc Tydon is one of the film’s most memorable ingredients.
Then CELLULOID STINKERS turns to THE THING WITH TWO HEADS, starring Ray Milland and Rosey Grier in a medical experiment that should never have survived the planning meeting.
One great film. One remarkable actor. Two heads. Several terrible decisions.

COMING SOON FROM STINKING PAUSE…
Scott. Charlie and Paul are joined by Maurice in Melbourne and Kerry in America to discuss Ted Kotcheff’s extraordinary 1971 psychological drama WAKE IN FRIGHT.
It is a brutal, unsettling journey into heat, isolation, alcohol and the sort of hospitality that begins with a friendly drink and ends with your dignity missing.
We also celebrate the life and career of the wonderfully distinctive DONALD PLEASENCE, before lowering the tone with our latest CELLULOID STINKER — THE THING WITH TWO HEADS from 1972, starring Ray Milland and Rosey Grier.
One great film. One remarkable actor. Two heads. Several regrettable decisions.
A new episode of STINKING PAUSE is coming very soon.
