Last July, the LA City Council banned the words "nigger" and "cunt" from their public comment period.
And while you may hate those epithets, it's a dangerous power to grant—one the council president is admittedly keen to abuse.
My first for the @latimes:

I’m tired of hearing “the Constitution is not a suicide pact” whenever someone wants to limit our rights.
The warning came from a 1949 Supreme Court dissent opposing a decision to overturn a conviction for inflammatory speech.
The majority ruled otherwise. America survived.

The @UofMaryland Athletics Department has agreed to First Amendment training with FIRE after two student journalists were reported to campus police for “suspicious activity” while trying to interview @umterps football players.
Student reporters should be able to do their jobs in public spaces without fear of unnecessary police encounters.
We appreciate Maryland Athletics’ willingness to address these concerns. Public universities — including their athletic departments — have a duty to protect press freedom, not intimidate those exercising it.
For @testudotimes, @JudeWilkenfeld and I were outside Jones-Hill House trying to get players to comment. An athletics staffer took pictures of us, and a police dispatch was called for suspicious activity; a cop and 2 cop cars pulled up, and officers ID’d us and asked us to leave.

1/ I'm critical of mainstream trans activism, especially when it comes to youth gender medicine. But I think it's important to remember that gender dysphoria is real, these are human beings, and that it's possible to criticize a movement without being cruel to individuals.

Listen, I know not everyone is going to agree with @TheFIREorg all the time. That’s unavoidable when you’re committed to being a genuinely nonpartisan institution in a hyperpartisan society, and when you don't shy away from complex cases that divide even the most thoughtful of us. But here’s my take:
If you agree with FIRE 50% of the time, you should probably be a donor.
If you agree with us 80% of the time, you should probably work here!

I was walking through Boston when I found myself cheering out loud for Yale.
Yes, Yale.
Its new report did something almost unthinkable for an elite university: honestly confronted some of academia’s biggest problems.
I was thrilled. And then I made a terrible mistake.

For 25 years at FIRE, I've watched universities demand endless evidence of problems they've known about for decades.
This summer, I revisited research and reports from Yale, Harvard, Vanderbilt, WashU, and Cornell.
I gave this familiar tactic a name: the Academic Filibuster.
Astronomers say they've discovered the first star that would appear green to human eyes.
The presence of calcium, sodium, and lithium in the star's composition is the source of its unusual color, astrophysicist Mark Hollands says.

Flock Safety has built a massive surveillance network to track Americans' movements. But when a researcher mapped more than 170,000 of its cameras, Flock responded with legal threats.
So, watching the public is fine. The public watching back? Not so much.
And that's just the beginning of this week's free speech roundup:
@TheFIREorg celebrates a victory for a New Jersey school board member targeted for asking constituents about taxes. @rshibley explains why the Cornell sexual assault controversy must not become an excuse to abandon due process. @JMchangama revisits Frederick Douglass's battles with the enemies of free speech. And @sarahemclaughlin covers a British teenager who got a visit from police after mocking a politician.
