Oliver Messel grew up at Nymans and his ashes are buried in the garden, along with his partner of 24 years, Vagn Riis-Hansen. Until now, only Oliver’s name was on the memorial, but this month, to recognise Oliver and Vagn’s life together, Vagn’s name has also been added.

I am so pleased that the new building at the Royal Sussex County Hospital has been named after the surgeon and suffragette, Dr Louisa Martindale. An excellent choice.
I advocated for this back in August in my @brightonargus column wp.me/pDTWu-1Uj
