He set up a school and it has a track record. Sadly that track record does not include high standards.

I don’t doubt Peter’s sincerity or his desire to improve education. However, good intentions are no substitute for a sound educational philosophy and a proven track record of delivering exceptional outcomes. Regrettably, I remain unconvinced by either.
Peter Hyman, who is writing Burnham's ten year plan, says we should move schools into "zoos" and "forests". Hear me out for a second - what if we put them in "classrooms" with "books"?

What a great read! The mention of 'APP' grids had me hyperventilating, what a logistical nightmare they were, having had firsthand experience of launching these at the time 🤯 Also, the phrase 'doing the same thing again & again and expecting a different result springs to mind 😵‍💫

Brilliant. Not enough is being said about the premise for these reforms being the rise in NEETs. The rise in NEETS has little to nothing to do with schooling, and almost everything to do with gov policy choices over the last decade.

This is a must read for anyone who has even a passing interest in the current education debate. It frames perfectly what the current govn is trying to achieved and how it might best do this, and the trade offs to get there. To me, it appears that standards are being traded off.

This is quality. Hopefully Labour and the DfE will read it.

A must-read. Evaluating education policy rigorously requires a) deep knowledge of the arguments, history & evidence & b) an awareness of what proponents & opponents of a policy value. @daisychristo demonstrates this in ways that our politicians would do well to learn from.

He’s been working hard for that for a long time though - and also so what? He gets even more rich, helps make a few schools a bit worse but they would have done that anyway 🤷

This absolutely nails it. Raises all the questions about education that journalists should be asking Lucy Powell, or for that matter, Andy Burnham.

Labour’s War on Standards.
Brilliant insightful piece from Daisy that unpicks many of the frustrations so many of us currently feel.

Tom, the more I read about what different people mean when they talk about oracy in the classroom the more I feel conflicted. For example, I am an experienced teacher and this year have top sets (not a normal situation for me at all!)...i reckon I could do some of the things /1

I think he’s been a peace with being a ping pong ball for many years. There is lots to say about it but he’s probably best ignored.

This is not new with Tom. The switches might have been a little more subtle over the past, but it’s constant.

So much damage is done by the idea that there is a majority of people for whom life is straightforward. The world was designed for them, they effortlessly comply with societal demands and get over their life stresses easily. They never wonder whether there is something different about them, or criticise themselves for minor failings. They sail through school and work. They have meaningful relationships with only transient conflict. Their emotions are manageable and in proportion. They are round pegs in round holes. The neurotypical Some people look like this from the outside. Hardly anyone reports being like this from the inside. Yet more and more books and training programmes promote the idea that if you’re not like this, you must be neurodivergent. Wired differently. We have pathologised the human condition.
