Trump said in a shock announcement today that the U.S. will cut its $4 billion annual military aid to Israel at the end of this year. I call bullshit. Here’s why in 3 minutes!

Another Yemeni abductee has died in Houthi captivity. Another family devastated. Three children left without their father. And once again, Houthis are allowed to operate a machinery of abductions, enforced disappearances, torture, and terror with near-total impunity. Mohammed Al-Shami was a UN human rights worker. His death in Houthi custody is yet another grim reminder that no one is safe from a militia that treats human life with such contempt, not even those working to defend the rights and dignity of others. Today, I received a heartbreaking call from the mother of a colleague who remains in Houthi detention. Shaken by the news of Mohammed's death, she asked me a question I could barely bring myself to answer: "After all my prayers and longing to hold my son in my arms again, will they return him to me as a lifeless body!?” What does one say to a mother who has spent years waiting for her son to come home, only to find herself wondering whether she will ever see him alive again? Her anguish speaks for countless Yemeni families living between hope and despair, terrified that the next devastating announcement could carry the name of someone they love. The international community cannot continue treating the systematic targeting and detention of humanitarian and UN personnel as another unfortunate feature of Yemen's conflict. Every death in custody raises urgent questions of responsibility, accountability, and the failure to protect those whose only mission was to serve others. Expressions of concern mean little when those responsible face no meaningful consequences. Mohammed's death demands an independent investigation, full accountability, and immediate action to secure the release of all those still held captive. My heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones. May he rest in peace. Silence and impunity have consequences. Mohammed and countless other Yemenis have paid for them with their lives. And somewhere tonight, another mother is wondering whether her son will be next.

Another death of a UN worker whilst in Houthi custody in North Yemen. Condemned by @antonioguterres The suffering of the people of Yemen is immense. Our crew were the last and only foreign journalists inside Taiz City and reported from there for several days before the Houthis encircled it. Our Yemeni team got us out hours before the Houthis besieged the city. If you didn’t see our report, this will give you an insight of how desperate it is inside the City ‘Houthis Taiz Sky News Alex Crawford Youtube' share.google/PCXdTAifiFQ8lx9…
I am appalled & deeply saddened by the death of a @UN colleague, Mohammad el Shami, while in the custody of the Houthi de facto authorities in Yemen. He served with @UNHumanRights & had been arbitrarily detained by the Houthis since 2024. This is the second death of a UN staff member in Houthi detention, following the death of a @WFP colleague in 2025. I remain gravely concerned for the safety & well-being of the UN personnel, former UN staff & personnel from humanitarian & civil society organizations who remain detained. I reiterate my call for their immediate & unconditional release.

The UN has blood on its hands. Two years of detention, and now a dead employee. Your silence and failure are disgraceful. You have betrayed the very people you claim to protect
Replying to @OHCHR_MENA

Years ago, when I worked with the UN, I had to send a daily evening check-in confirming that I was safe. Today, after Mohammed Al-Shami’s death in Houthi detention, I question what those promises of protection were ever worth. Shame on the UN

Shame on the UN! Your own employee dies in Houthi detention after two years, and all you offer are statements of condemnation and empty expressions of concern. What a disgraceful failure to protect even your own staff!

2/6 Mohammed was kind, cheerful and always ready to help. When we last met in Sana’a, he proudly told me he had reached the highest grade for local UN staff. He loved his work and believed in serving people.

1/6 There is grief in every Yemeni home. Today, it is in ours. We mourn my beloved cousin, Mohammed Al-Shami, a UN human rights worker and father of three, whose death we learned of following his detention in Sana’a.

Heartbreaking news of the death of Mohammed Al-Shami, an administrative staff member at the UN Human Rights Office in Yemen, in Houthi detention after nearly two years. A father of three, whose family waited two years for his return, only to be told to collect his body

If Britain is preparing for emergencies, imagine how worried we should be here in Yemen. 💔

I met this man from Mayyun Island at a displacement camp in Aden. He once had a comfortable home with air conditioning running 24/7. Now, he lives in a tent in the heat, longing even for the smell of Mayyun’s famous fish dish. His island community is scattered 💔

Having followed Yemen’s war since 2014, I believe the past two months have been among its fiercest, with devastating human and military losses and an expanding battlefield. No governorate or village can be considered safe.
