Software engineering is starting to feel like being the guy who helps everyone at self-checkout. I used to write the code, write the tests, open the PR, merge it and monitor it. Now I've got a screen full of tabs. One agent coding, another reviewing, another stuck on something it said it fixed three times already. I jump in, unblock it, check its work, move to the next tab. Same energy as “unexpected item in the bagging area.” The supermarket still needs someone watching the machines... but 6 checkouts only need 1-2 people. It's looking bleak for junior engineers. The tasks we learned on are the first ones we're handing to agents. Those are increasingly the tasks we'd give mid or senior engineers too! If we stop hiring people to learn the job, where do the people qualified to supervise it come from? Maybe the current seniors are the last of their kind.
