There is no replacement for .org. It represents trust, authority, and there is no alternative. Nobody is or can be a replacement for that extension.
From @andrewrosener "Other than .com it's the only one with a real moat around it"

Misspelling risk matters too. A company shouldn’t have to repeatedly spell its own domain during phone calls.
Pronunciation problems are often underestimated. If people hesitate before saying the name, the brand may have a problem.
I would never buy a domain simply because it has a certain number of letters. Patterns can help, but meaning matters more.
A Hand-Reg Isn’t a $12 Decision. It’s $12 Annually.

A seven-letter domain that communicates nothing can be weaker than a twelve-letter domain that instantly makes sense. Short is valuable when the shortness actually improves the name.
The cleanest domains often carry more meaning with fewer characters. Character count alone isn’t the goal. Efficiency is.
Brand education is expensive. A domain that reduces the amount of explaining a company needs to do can have real value.
There is a reason ordinary words keep producing extraordinary domain sales. People already know what they mean.
Another clue is whether customers use the term, not just marketers. Words customers already understand are easier to build brands around.
One clue that a new term has staying power is when several unrelated companies start using it independently.

New terminology sometimes enters company language before it enters aftermarket pricing. That gap can create opportunity. The hard part is figuring out which terminology will stick.
I like checking how frequently an emerging term appears in corporate press releases. Businesses can reveal their future vocabulary before domain investors notice it.
Look at contracts, conferences, software tools, job openings and acquisitions. A lot of good domain research happens outside the domain industry.
A domain category becomes more interesting to me when companies are already spending money around the underlying term. Commercial behavior is more convincing than social media excitement.
