The 26th East African Community (EAC) MSME Trade Fair is set to take place in Kigali, Rwanda, from 30th October to 8th November 2026, providing a regional platform for Kenyan Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) to showcase their entrepreneurial talent, locally made products and innovations. Ahead of the fair, Principal Secretary for Trade Regina Ombam paid a courtesy call on the Principal Secretary for MSMEs @SusanAMangeni to discuss Kenya’s participation and strategies to maximise the opportunities presented by the regional event. The discussions focused on expanding market access for Kenyan MSMEs, increasing intra-regional trade, and connecting local enterprises to new markets and value chains across East Africa. The delegation will also explore opportunities under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) to position Kenyan businesses for wider continental trade.

I hosted my sister, Regina Ombam, Principal Secretary for Trade, to discuss Kenya’s participation and strategies to maximise the opportunities presented by this regional platform. We aim to expand market access for Kenyan MSMEs, increase intra-regional trade, and connect our enterprises to new markets and value chains across East Africa. This afternoon I joined the multi-agency team carrying out rescue operations at the collapsed building that was under construction in the Eastleigh area, Nairobi County. I was briefed on the progress of the operations and, more so, on the plight of the construction workers who were on site at the time when the tragedy struck. The rescue of two people yesterday, one of the construction workers and a lady shopkeeper, raises our hope of getting those who may still be trapped alive. The team has assured Kenyans that they are doing all it takes to ensure that the rescue mission succeeds. (1/2)

(2/2) So far, 47 people have been reported missing, and the Red Cross have so far traced 9 and linked them to the families. 38 more persons are still missing, and the rescue is engaging all apparatus to verify and ascertain the whereabouts of all those who have been reported as missing. We call upon all the agencies and stakeholders concerned in the construction industry to undertake their roles diligently and enforce compliance in the industry to prevent such tragedies from recurring. Unfortunately, our Jua kali workers, the plumbers, the masons, the artisans and mama mbogas bear the brunt in such incidents. To the family and friends who are still waiting for their loved ones who might still be trapped in the ruins, our prayers are with you, and we are hopeful that the rescue will be successful.

This morning, I officiated the handover of leadership of the Kenya Institute of Business Training (KIBT) to Mr Evans Oyaro , as we embark on repositioning the institution into a Centre for Enterprise Development to help MSMEs scale, attract investment and create jobs. Established in 1966 to offer entrepreneurial and managerial activities, KIBT’s role is more critical today, with MSMEs contributing over 90% of all new jobs in Kenya. Beyond Business skills training, we are strengthening KIBT’s role in mentorship, research, business innovation and incubation.

I assure Mr Oyaro of our full support as we transform KIBT into a centre of excellence for enterprise development.

The Kenya Institute of Business Training (KIBT), a directorate in our State Department, provides business and management development services to MSMEs through training, research, consultancy, counselling, extension services and business information to enhance enterprise performance. We are also developing the framework for the accreditation of Business Development Service (BDS) providers and standardisation of the BDS curriculum to ensure MSMEs access consistent, quality and practical business support across the country. I met with the Kenya BDS Vision Team, led by CEO Peter Nduati, to explore collaboration to strengthen Business Development Services (BDS). Kenya BDS Vision is developing a digital platform to align government, BDS providers, financial institutions and development partners around shared standards, practical tools and market-linked service delivery. We also discussed the planned establishment of enterprise hubs in universities that will bridge the gap between classroom learning and industry experience. These hubs will help graduates translate their knowledge into viable businesses while connecting aspiring entrepreneurs to mentorship, business advisory services, finance and markets

I joined our Cabinet Secretary @DrOparanya for a ministerial Performance Evaluation for the Financial Year 2025/2026, an exercise that was coordinated by Hon. Ahmed Abdisalan Ibrahim, Principal Secretary for National Government Coordination. PS Ahmed Ibrahim commended our Ministry for its remarkable progress, recognising it as the most improved ministry in the last performance evaluation. This recognition underscores our commitment to strengthening service delivery, enhancing institutional efficiency, and advancing the Government’s development agenda. The evaluation provides an opportunity to assess achievements against set targets, identify areas for improvement, and strengthen accountability in the implementation of programmes and projects supporting cooperative development and the growth of Enterprises and cooperatives.

Last evening, I joined the KNCCI@60 Gala Dinner & Awards 2026, which marked the successful conclusion of the Africa Commerce & Industry Summit (ACIS) 2026. The summit brought together private sector leaders and representatives from all 47 counties. As @MSMEsKenya , we recognise and appreciate the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KNCCI) as a strategic partner in advancing Kenya’s private sector. We look forward to strengthening our collaboration with the Chamber, including supporting the establishment of the Junior Chamber to nurture young entrepreneurs and prepare the next generation of business leaders.
