I rambled. Want to thank @mgeist for giving me the opportunity. "Culture" and "Innovation" in this country are broken. Not unfixable though.
Has the government killed the proverbial goose that laid the golden egg on cultural support? Millions lost from TikTok, Netflix, Meta, Spotify, Disney and others due largely to Canadian policy. @SwBenzie returns to the @lawbytespod podcast to discuss. xitter.cf/mgeist/status/19472958…

1/3 Among other things I work A LOT in Canadian Media events. I work A LOT on funding Canadian Content. Netflix is essentially out, TikTok is out META out, Prime, Disney etc out. All as a direct result of the CDN Government and how they went about "negotiating" with them.

Content is a global game now, and foreign companies are interested in doing business in Canada....but not at any cost. Heavy lobbying by entrenched groups fighting for relevance has literally bitten off the hand that will feed them in the future.

An "own goal" of epic proportions will hurt in the end, the tax payer forced to subsidize culture approved by Gov't bodies and the excellent creatives here that could be thriving globally. End result of course is everyone leaves, because it doesn't matter where you are anymore.

Can't even pick up the phone @melaniejoly ? Minister of Innovation? Minister of Industry?
TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew wrote Industry Minister Mélanie Joly a letter requesting an urgent in-person meeting to discuss the government’s ordered shutdown of TikTok Canada — but his request has so far gone unanswered. politico.com/newsletters/can…

Can anyone point to a win by Canada when it comes to digital policy in the last 10 years? A single one? It's just been garbage after garbage.

Reposting this thread I shared from back in Nov. 2024 incase everyone needs a reminder of what contributing to the entertainment eco system means... Great job so far gang... #C11
Companies like Tik Tok do a lot more than just support a content creator industry and job creation. They also sponsor actively engage in sponsorships and partnerships across various Canadian events and orgs (a thread) 1/7

Canada's best Cultural export has entered the chat. This is not the way forward. @melaniejoly Canada's cultural entrepreneurs are not happy. This is not the way.

Holy Moly. When I agree with ADISQ you know the gov has lost the plot. "Pare says the partnership helped bring visibility to ADISQ. Last year’s gala had 6.5 million views on social media, .... she says was “unheard of” before TikTok came on board." ctvnews.ca/entertainment/art…

I also notice a real lack of outcry from the "Canadian Creators .. Culture. Protection...blah blah blah" crowd. It is noted.
1/3 Terrible. Full disclosure 2 of my orgs have benefited from TikTok's support, one of the programs goes directly to support Indigenous Youth training programs and building studios in community. When we ask why, the answer is still "Trust Me Bro" and it is not good enough.

This is correct. All of it.

Thank you @TikTokCanada @deEyre for hosting myself and other creators last night for an incredible dinner! I’ve been pushing Conservatives to take Tik-Tok seriously because it works! It’s where the next generation is and where the conversation is happening. This platform matters 🇨🇦

At least....and for what...what did we get out of it?
Someone must have come up with a tally of how many sponsorship and commercial dollars from Google, Meta, TikTok, etc have disappeared from Canada in the last three years. Must be close $100 million by now.

This hurts Canadian Creators. This puts Canadian Creators at a disadvantage globally. This is why Canadian Creators leave Canada. This is happening without explanation. Canadian Entrepreneurs lose and Canada takes a step back in Digital Policy. Again.
The consequences of Canada’s digital policies continue to unfold. Government oddly targeted TikTok’s corporate presence in Canada rather than the app itself. The result: millions in support for arts groups predictably canceled to comply with the ruling. xitter.cf/CTVNews/status/1942280…

If there are spies, why are they not arrested? If the app is the problem why do we still have it. I know the people at @TikTokCanada , they are good Canadians and until proven otherwise or given any info at all, this a joke.
