When composing the music for Streets Of Rage, I wasn't deeply familiar with the Roland TR-808 or its successors, only their names. Yet, I recognized their iconic sounds from many Western hits. The SOR music was heavily influenced by these. I emulated these drum sounds using the YM2608/2612 FM sound chip, which is distinct from the analog oscillators/PCM in the drum machines. Listen to this video of the PC-8801FA playing "Stealthy Steps" from SOR. The solo 808-ish drum sound is featured at the beginning. It's remarkably close to what I recall from my composing days.
