Our dear media may not want to give the Greens too much oxygen — but you can avoid the censorship by watching here Greens leader David Shoebridge’s remarkable speech. There is an alternative vision for Australia, and these ideas deserve far wider discussion and consideration. See if you agree.

THE UNITED NATIONS HAS RESPONDED TO MY INVESTIGATION INTO WOMEN GIVING BIRTH IN CHAINS IN AUSTRALIA. I've received a written response from the office of UN Special Rapporteur on violence against women and girls, Reem Alsalem, concerning the shackling of incarcerated women during childbirth. What the UN has told me raises serious questions about the Australian Government's refusal to support legislation banning this practice. The response explicitly states: “Australia's federal structure cannot, in itself, excuse non-compliance with its international human rights obligations.” It acknowledges that corrective services are administered by states and territories, but makes clear that this does not resolve Australia's responsibilities under international law. The response cites Rule 24 of the UN Bangkok Rules, which expressly provides that instruments of restraint “shall never be used on women during labour, during birth and immediately after birth.” It also states: “The Commonwealth should therefore explain what concrete national measures it will pursue to ensure that this practice is prohibited, prevented and effectively monitored.” These are important statements from the office of a UN Special Rapporteur. The Commonwealth cannot simply point to state and territory responsibility without explaining how Australia will meet its international human rights obligations. Yet the Federal Government and Opposition declined to support Senator Lidia Thorpe's legislation to prohibit shackling during childbirth. Leading obstetricians, including representatives of RANZCOG, have warned that shackling during childbirth can put BOTH MOTHER AND BABY at serious medical risk. Restraints can impede emergency treatment when seconds may mean the difference between life and death. It is cruel, degrading, medically unnecessary and potentially dangerous. I am now seeking direct answers from Minister for Women Katy Gallagher (@SenKatyG) and Health Minister Mark Butler (@Mark_Butler_MP) and our PM @AlboMP Will they support a complete prohibition on shackling during labour, childbirth and immediately afterwards? What concrete national measures will they take to prevent this practice? And when will they act? Senators Lidia Thorpe, David Shoebridge, Fatima Payman and David Pocock have supported efforts to end this practice. Their continued involvement is particularly important following this UN response. @SenatorThorpe @DavidShoebridge @SenatorPayman @DavidPocock These women are giving birth in Australian hospitals. Their babies have committed no crime. Australia's international human rights obligations cannot simply be passed from Canberra to the states and territories. The fight to end childbirth in chains is far from over. #auspol #HumanRights #WomensRights #MaternalHealth #PrisonReform #EndShackling #BangkokRules #unitednations #unwomen

“Their income, those gas companies, is around 580,000 times that of an Australian’s real wage... The outrage is absolutely justified.” – Ed Husic MP at the Gas Reservation Debate yesterday. Join the call for a national plebiscite to introduce a 25% gas export tax on our website!

I urge all clear-minded Australians to listen, and to take in, the National Press Club address today by the leader of the Greens, David Shoebridge. Those of us who were brought up in days past will recognise his ambition to get back to a fairer nation.

The best move the @Greens ever made was appointing @DavidShoebridge as the party leader. Finally someone the whole country can get behind because he speaks the truth!!

'We can structure a Commonwealth Tax 🇦🇺💰 based on the corporations power that responds to commodity prices. So that when the boom happens a fair share of the cream 🍦💲 gets captured by the public not just a handful of super wealthy shareholders'. After all the PUBLIC OWNS THESE RESOURCES 🛢️🪨⛽️ in the first place. I want to end this speech with one simple idea, 'BETTER DAYS ARE COMING 💚'. @DavidShoebridge

'Raising the tax 💲free threshold to $18,200 to $26,000 ... and we're not leaving anyone behind. We are also proposing a matching $1000 annual boost for people on income support, for pensioners, carers, students, job seekers, those on disability benefits ... no matter who you are... you'll get $1000 more.' 'The 1% and their spinners want you to ignore another key driver of inflation, the record surge in corporate profits in corporations WHO DON'T PAY their fair way of tax 💰'. @DavidShoebridge

'The reality of the unfair system, struck in my mind so starkly. People being discarded by the system, marginalised, disposable, but as a lawyer you fight these cases one by one. Justice was getting harder by the day.' @DavidShoebridge

'NO TAX ⛔️💰 - AI COMPANIES - like Microsoft Data Centres, or CDC holdings - PAY. NO. TAX. It might not be illegal for billion 💰dollar corporations to send their revenue offshore and park it in tax havens to avoid paying their fair share of tax - BUT ITS BLOODY IMMORAL and IT NEEDS TO BE ILLEGAL. Its time to make Gas ⛽️ pay their fair share, and its time to make the Resources industry, pay its fair share.' @DavidShoebridge

'Well the good 1st step is we ELECTRIFY ⚡️EVERYTHING and we end our reliance on foreign oil and petrol. And so when there's another global crisis started by a random war monger. When we are not paying $2.50 per/litre for fuel ⛽️, while Ampol increases its profits by 376%'. WE CAN BE A COUNTRY THAT CAN STAND ON OUR TWO FEET! 👣 @DavidShoebridge
