For a lot of Kentucky yearlings, the decision about where to sell starts in July, when Keeneland hands out book placements. I followed the horses from Keeneland September to Fasig-Tipton October to see how sellers use the second sale. tbintel.com/insights/keenela… @FasigTiptonCo @keenelandsales

Recommended read: @AHughesMedia has a good piece in the October BloodHorse on Liam’s Map and Not This Time. Both are out of Miss Macy Sue, a Trippi mare bought for $42,000 at the 2005 OBS June sale. As of today, Not This Time is leading the general sires list, and Liam's Map is 12th. The fee history is what caught my attention. Not This Time stood his first four seasons at $15,000. Last week Taylor Made set his 2027 fee at $300,000. The horses that put him on top this year came from books bred at $40,000 and $45,000. Breeders who used him then got this year’s leading sire for a seventh of next year’s price or less, and the fee didn’t catch up until the runners were already winning. That lag between the racetrack and the stud fee is a big part of what we measure at Thoroughbred Intelligence. It’s in the October print issue, subscribers only. shop.bloodhorse.com/collecti…

Only two Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winners have gone on to win the Kentucky Derby: Street Sense and Nyquist. Last year’s Juvenile sent two horses to Louisville, and they ran 16th and 17th. Bob Baffert’s undefeated Hughes will be a heavy favorite next Friday at Keeneland, and he may well win. Just don’t price the Derby off it. Favorites also tend to struggle in the Juvenile Fillies, winning it only four times in the last 15 years. Noel Michaels at @ABRLive put together a clean primer on all five Future Stars Friday races, with post times, contenders, and the O’Brien and Appleby storylines on the turf. Worth ten minutes before the weekend. americasbestracing.net/the-s…

The cheap pinhooks were the good trades at Fasig-Tipton October. Horses bought for under $25,000 typically sold for more than double. Three out of four bought for $100,000 or more sold for less than they cost. tbintel.com/insights/fasig-t… @FasigTiptonCo
