We've had a busy week. On Tuesday we shared our Mind the Engagement Gap paper with the world. Using insights from over 100,000 pupils across England through @TEP_Community , #RCELI tracked how pupil engagement changed across the 2024–25 academic year. The insights are sobering, urgent but actionable. Full report available here: impactedgroup.uk/resources/r… Coverage in the TES: tes.com/magazine/news/second… We also gathered together for our May Residential. This term we had hackathons, personal development and planning sessions at top of the agenda. As well as our normal Employee Voice Board and Group and TEP Boards. Thank you again to Vince Green and David Salisbury for sharing their time to speak to us.

Our new Family Engagement Taskforce launches today to find the best means of building consistent and meaningful engagement with parents and carers. At the beginning of this academic year, ImpactEd Group launched a nationwide research initiative focused on engagement in schools, to determine whether levels of engagement of key stakeholder groups could act as an early warning sign for future educational outcomes, such as attendance and attainment. Family engagement is an important part of that picture. The Education Endowment Foundation (@EducEndowFoundn ) cites 97 studies linking parental engagement to improved outcomes, with data suggesting it can contribute approximately four months of additional progress for students. And yet, no standardised framework exists to track parental engagement with live benchmarks, hindering schools' ability to evaluate effectiveness. Thus, we are inviting schools and trusts with successful family engagement strategies to share practices and join our research project as we build a comprehensive national picture, providing data and insights to help predict, intervene, and support pupils. Tell us what has worked here impacted.typeform.com/to/ImD… and join us as participants on this research project as we build the picture of family engagement across the country. Today, our national research commission on engagement shares early insights from a pupil study of more than 80,000 children. Emerging trend 1 Pupils in Year 7 and Year 8 experience a decline in how happy they are to go to school which does not fully recover as they move through secondary school, with responses showing a 7.6 average score in Year 3 compared to 5.2 and 4.0 in Year 7 and 8, respectively. Emerging trend 2 Pupils experience a sharp decline in their engagement upon entering secondary school, reporting a lower perception of the importance of learning (from 9.2 in primary school to 7.6 in secondary), lower perception of feeling safe at school (8.4 in primary school to 6.5 in secondary), and sense of agency (8.3 in primary school to 7.4 in secondary) compared to primary school and post-16 pupils. Emerging trend 3 Girls feel increasingly less safe at school and more worried compared to their male peers between Year 7 and Year 9, reporting scores of more than 8.0 in Year 6 to below 6.0 by Year 9. If you are interested in understanding the data in your setting or joining the research cohort: tep.uk/ More on the story available here: impactedgroup.uk/news-and-bl… #RCELI

In his latest blog John explores the topic of truancy. It has been widely reported that – since the pandemic – school absences in England have risen. This is obviously a major challenge facing our education system; young people are unlikely to learn much unless we can get them through the school gates. In a new academic working paper published today johnjerrim.com/the-rise-in-t… @JohnPeterJerrim investigates how often Year 11s in England report skipping school and compares this to the situation in other countries, and how this has changed before and after the COVID-19 pandemic. Commissioners will then seek to understand whether engagement trends are acting as lead indicators, or early warning signals, for fluctuations in attendance or attainment.
