Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay has ordered strict action against officials for lapses in Theni prison security, inadequate monitoring and negligence in duty.
The govt said, accordingly, deputy jail officer N Nageswaran, who had been holding additional charge as superintendent of Theni district prison since August 6, 2024, was placed under suspension from October 30 until further orders. The suspension was ordered under the Tamil Nadu Civil Services (Discipline and Appeal) Rules for failing to properly supervise and maintain control over inmates and prison staff.
In another administrative reshuffle, Madurai Central Prison superintendent R Krishnaraj has been transferred to Salem Central Prison to strengthen supervision, accountability and security in prison administration.
The government has also warned prison officials to discharge their responsibilities with utmost care and vigilance, stating that strict action would be taken against those found negligent or lax in security and monitoring duties.

Greater Chennai Corporation Engineers must photograph milled surfaces and display the pictures at the work site for public to see, according to @chennaicorp’s latest guidelines for road repaying for better quality.
Other key points:
• Repeatedly raising road levels through successive bituminous layers must be avoided.
• Existing road conditions, levels, camber, drainage and adjoining property levels must be assessed before relaying.
• Mechanical milling must be carried out wherever necessary to maintain approved road levels.
• Milling depth should generally match the proposed thickness of the new bituminous layer.
• Milled surfaces must have a uniform, smooth finish without ridges or undulations.
• Road camber and cross-fall must be corrected during milling.
• Mechanical brooming to remove dust, loose aggregates and debris is mandatory before applying tack coat.
• Where mechanical milling is not feasible, road surfaces must be removed manually or using suitable equipment.
• Manhole covers, utility chambers, footpaths and drainage structures must be aligned with the finished road level.
• Engineers must photograph milled surfaces and display the pictures at the work site.
• All engineers have been directed to strictly implement these instructions in road relaying works across GCC limits.

Highways Dept’s new rule for contractors in state highways maintenance in city roads: fix potholes in 24 hours or face penalty followed by termination.
For the first time, they’ve piloted a performance based contract system like @NHAI_Official which follows a short and long term maintenance.
This is done at aim to fix accountability and also ensure roads aren’t randomly relaid.
Earlier, there was no mechanism to just fix roads. The dept used to do it as and when from its routine maintenance funds or ended up just fully relaying it. My story in page 1 @timesofindia
